“Dayung Gawea”

The Land Dayak or Bidayuh community in East Malaysia (Sarawak) strongly reveres paddy planting, with “Gawea” encompassing festivals, rituals, and ceremonies held throughout the farming year. “Gawea” or Gawai Festival celebrated every 1st June post-harvest, was not only about the production of “podi” (rice paddy) but also intertwined with rituals aimed at seeking blessings from spirits, and in ancient times, it included elements related to headhunting.
