A Delicate Dance of Micro-Plumasserie

Within a fantastical landscape, an imaginary serpent coils across the dial of the "Feathersnake" timepiece, while highlighting the rare art of micro-plumasserie. Crafted by Julien Vermeulen, this creation rises a mere three millimetres above the surface, yet achieves a remarkable sense of volume and plasticity.

The serpent itself is a mosaic of over 200 tiny pieces, meticulously derived from seven rare Lophophore feathers. To achieve such intricate detail, the artist removed the feather's central quill and mounted the delicate plumes onto silk paper for exceptionally precise cuts. This demanding process, requiring precision akin to surgery, involved the creation of custom micro-tools, including a scalpel fashioned from a reshaped needle, and consumed approximately 250 hours of dedicated work.

This Métiers d'Art creation, where the snake's eye in 18-karat gold and enamel anchors the kinetic composition, exemplifies the Maison's enduring commitment to pushing the boundaries of savoir-faire and artistic expression within Haute Horlogerie, transforming unexpected crafts into miniature works of art.

A tiger in shimmering hues of honey and tangerine defiantly prowls across an imaginary jungle, encapsulated within the dial through the rare technique of gold embroidery. This Métiers d'Art creation, part of the 'Tribute to the Animal Kingdom' series, reveals a new dimension of artistic expression.

The feline is meticulously rendered using 9-karat yellow and white gold embroidery wires, creating its warm tones, while ceramic-coated black wires form its distinctive stripes. This combination imparts a sculptural quality and dramatic chiaroscuro effect. The lush landscape is embroidered onto specially commissioned green silk, supported by a titanium dial plate.

This demanding art required bespoke needles as fine as 0.25 millimetres and the development of new miniature tools to twist and coil 9-karat gold into workable threads. Each hand-cut gold wire fragment is less than a millimetre, and the eyes alone required ten different shades of silk for depth. The entire dial demanded approximately 210 hours of dedicated work, all while respecting the strict constraint of a mere three to four millimetres in height.

Artist Laura Baverstock, through this collaboration, has pushed the boundaries of traditional goldwork embroidery, elevating it to a new level of art. This timepiece exemplifies the Maison's unwavering commitment to fostering artistic excellence and expanding the creative vocabulary of Métiers d'Art within Haute Horlogerie.

Glass Artistry: Revealing Poetic Sculptures

From the nocturnal depths of the dial, a miniature transparent octopus appears to drift, suspended in an imaginary underwater world. This remarkable sculpture, crafted by artist Simone Crestani and rising only 3.5 millimetres above the dial, redefines the art of glass at a microscopic scale.

This achievement required the development of a new technique: melting tiny glass rods and shaping them with tungsten tools, proceeding piece by piece in a method akin to manual 3D printing. Each te****le and sucker was meticulously constructed, dot by dot, to achieve its intricate 2.5D form.

The choice of transparent glass presented its own complexities, requiring careful consideration of thickness, overlap, and refraction to create optical illusions and avoid distortion. Over a year of dedicated development, including numerous prototypes, ensured every detail remained readable and alive within the dial's architecture. This collaboration exemplifies Vacheron Constantin's "One of Not Many Crafts Programme", expanding the creative vocabulary of Métiers d’Art and showcasing an enduring quest for artistic excellence within Haute Horlogerie.

A Timeless Radiance

The Fiftysix Self-Winding timepiece embodies retro-contemporary elegance, drawing from a golden age of watchmaking.

Here, the black dial, a canvas of double finishes with opaline in its centre and sunburst on the surrounding chapter ring, creates an elegant play of light and shade. Encased in warm pink gold, its aesthetic is further enhanced by a box-type sapphire crystal, reminiscent of post-war watches, and harmoniously paired with an anthracite nubuck calfskin strap.

This Fiftysix model, with the Maltese cross subtly integrated into its design, is more than a watch; it is an invitation to discover the hidden knowledge and exceptional craftsmanship that define Vacheron Constantin.
