What makes the Kanchipuram sarees a legacy textile, somewhere between divine significance and human mastery?

Why are they passed down as family heirlooms, generational wedding sarees, or offered as gifts to the gods? Why is it said that Kanchipurams are extraordinary in the way that they were made, the materials chosen, and the way they endure through wear, memory, and the passing of generations?

This June, we attempt to answer those questions.

Rithihi presents ‘To Wear a Poem’, an exhibition opening on the 11th of June and running through the 27th. It will be an exhibition of Rithihi’s Kanchipuram saree collection with insights into what makes these legendary sarees unique, why
they’ve been secured with a Geographical Indication tag by the Government of India, and how they become generational textile treasures, even today.

Rithihi’s Kanchipuram Sarees Revealed Through Sangam Poetry

June 11-27, from 10 am to 6 pm
At Rithihi, 19 Alfred House Gardens, Colombo 3

Kanchipuram sarees, woven in pure mulberry silk with real silver and gold thread, are woven by artisans who rhythmically sync a complex double warp-weft weave. Kanchipuram sarees are born from this highly technical craft practiced by traditional textile weavers in South India. Rithihi is unveiling its Kanchipuram collection in Colombo this June.

For generations, Kanchipuram’s weavers have carried their silk heritage forward despite facing financial hardship, competition from powerlooms, and an influx of cheaper imitations. The
Government of India has recognized this craft with a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, protecting its authenticity and honouring the lineage of traditional artisans who sustain it. Yet, their challenges persist. What keeps these weavers going is loyalty to their craft and staying true to the legacy it represents.

With this exhibition, Rithihi wants to share the technical and material marvel that is the Kanchipuram saree, sharing the
story behind one of the most treasured textiles on earth.

Threads once drawn from worn cloth, gathered and stitched back together with patience and care, transformed into something richer than what came before. That is the spirit of Kantha, a tradition born from renewal, where memory and meaning were sewn into every stitch.
