🌿 From Knowledge to Action: Protecting the Species That Need Us Most 🌱

What if a species disappeared before most of us even knew it existed? Biodiversity conservation starts with understanding what we have, what is threatened, and what we can do to protect it.

Hayleys Fabric Group Compliance Team participated in the National Red List Awareness Program 2026 at the Seethawaka Wet Zone Botanic Gardens, organized by the Biodiversity Secretariat of the Ministry of Environment.

Held on 21st August 2026, sessions featured:
🔹 Prof. Siril Wijesundara (Chairman, Flora Expert Committee) – National Red List 2020 scientific basis.
🔹 Dr. Achala Attanayake (Flora Expert, National Botanical Gardens) – Botanical gardens and ex-situ conservation.
🔹 Dr. Himesh Jayasinghe (NIFS / Flora Expert) – Plant rediscovery and field surveys.

Highlights included planting two critically endangered endemic species—Horawal (Stemonoporus moonii) and Suwanda (Kayea stylosa)—from Walawwatta Wathurana.

With 72.5% of Sri Lanka's endemic angiosperms threatened, conservation is about planting right, protecting right, and restoring with purpose. 🌏💚

For Hayleys Fabric PLC & Limited, this supports initiatives across Diyathuru Uyana, Thuru Arana, Tharuwara Uyana, and the Eco Reserve forest belt, aligning with our ESG targets, GRI 304 compliance, 2026-27 standard transitions, and TNFD recommendations.

🌿 From Knowledge to Action: Protecting the Species That Need Us Most 🌱

What if a species disappeared before most of us even knew it existed?

That question reminds us that biodiversity conservation is much more than planting trees. It starts with understanding what we have, what is threatened, and what we can do to protect it.

Our Hayleys Fabric Group Compliance Team had the privilege of participating in the National Red List Awareness Program 2026 focused on the Sri Lankan Flora Conservation, at the Seethawaka Wet Zone Botanic Gardens, organized by the Biodiversity Secretariat of the Ministry of Environment.

During this full day session held on 21st of August 2026, we were fortunate to learn from leading experts through three insightful sessions:

🔹 Prof. Siril Wijesundara – Chairman, Flora Expert Committee
📖 The scientific basis and conservation significance of the National Red List 2020

🔹 Dr. Achala Attanayake – Flora Expert, National Botanical Gardens
🌱 The role of National Botanical Gardens in Red List preparation and ex-situ conservation

🔹 Dr. Himesh Jayasinghe – NIFS / Flora Expert
🔎 Rediscovery of critically endangered and possibly extinct plants, and the critical need for field surveys

🌱 A particularly meaningful highlight was witnessing the ex-situ conservation planting of two critically endangered endemic species - Horawal (Stemonoporus moonii) and Suwanda (Kayea stylosa), associated with highly sensitive habitats such as Walawwatta Wathurana, Bulathsinhala.

With 72.5% of Sri Lanka’s endemic angiosperms threatened, the message is clear:

Conservation is not about planting more.
It is about planting right.
Protecting right.
And restoring with purpose. 🌏💚_

For Hayleys Fabric PLC & South Asia Textiles Limited, this learning strengthens our biodiversity journey and helps us make better decisions on species selection, monitoring, habitat management and ecological restoration across initiatives such as Diyathuru Uyana Wetland Park, Thuru Arana Forest Cover & Butterfly Garden, Tharuwara Uyana Fruit Garden and the Eco Reserve forest belt.

This learning directly supports Hayleys Fabric ESG and biodiversity commitments, including our target to enhance biodiversity program to cover five times the area occupied by the Group , with a long term net-positive impact through ecological restoration and conservation. These efforts include habitat protection and the conservation of species of biodiversity significance, including species identified on the IUCN Red List within conservation areas.

The Group has also disclosed its biodiversity related commitments in accordance with GRI 304. Looking ahead, Hayleys Fabric will transition to the revised GRI Standard in 2026-27, while further strengthening its biodiversity related disclosures in alignment with the Taskforce on Nature related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) recommendations.

Our ambition goes beyond compliance - towards creating lasting value for nature and a long-term net-positive impact on biodiversity.

A meaningful day of learning, connecting science with action, and reminding ourselves that every species matters - even those most people have never heard of.
