# The Kaya Palm Nursery
*Making deserts come alive*
Vision ⭐
The Problem:
Desertification happens when
there are not enough roots in the soil to hold it together and replenish it with nutrients. As those people are typically living under economically unstable and harsh conditions, they turn to the resources at hand to process and sell them. The people live from the land they live on. As education levels of such populations are usually marginal, there is little knowledge about natural ecosystems and their regeneration potential. The problem consists in an excessive use of land and cutting of trees and plants, while the land has no time to regenerate and produces less and less plants, that hold the soil together. Thus, biodiversity drops significantly as animals and insectes find less food and disappear, giving the soil even less resources to support plants. Soon, the land becomes a desert hostile to most life-forms. Fewer resources result in less crops and wood, making the economic situation for the locals even worse, sparking more social conflict and environmental migration. Our solution approach:
Planting different, locally attuned plants and trees is a sustainable way to stop and reverse the process of desertification. By revitalizing the soil, it can turn fruitful again and attract more animals that further enrich the soil, which leads to more plants growing quicker and bigger. The ecosystem can heal and starts to regenerate itself. By educating the local population about the dangers of excessive deforestation, the dynamics of natural ecosystems and regenerative agriculture, they can start working with the land in a natural, healthy way that stabilizes and improves their socioeconomic situation drastically, mitigating the need to leave the land in search for a better life. By creating the Palm Nursery, we can also establish working places for locals. How are we doing this? We are creating a daycare system for plants in Oujda, Morocco called the KAYA Palm Nursery. There, people are invited to adopt plants for a small donation and can learn together. Mainly, this place is intended to be a space to foster community and shared learning experiences in the context of regenerative agriculture. By selling self-designed and produced clothing in Europe, we generate first funding and establish the brand. Milestones
