🔎 Ahoana no nahafantarana azy?
Ny tantaran’ny anarana dia tena mahaliana!
Tamin’ny 1896, ny paleontôlôgy frantsay Charles Depéret no namaritra voalohany ireo fôsily izay nantsoiny hoe Megalosaurus crenatissimus
Taty aoriana, tamin’ny 1955, i René Lavocat no nametraka azy tao amin’ny karazana vaovao Majungasaurus, mifototra amin’ny dentaire hita tao amin’ilay faritra
🇲🇬 Ary avy aiza ny anarana “Majungasaurus”?
Ny anarana Majungasaurus dia avy amin’ny anarana taloha hoe "Majunga" ho an’ilay faritra any avaratrandrefan’i Madagasikara, miaraka amin’ny teny grika sauros, izay midika hoe “androngo”.
👉 Majungasaurus ≈ “androngo avy any Majunga”
🦖 Nahoana izy no zava-dehibe?
Majungasaurus crenatissimus dia manampy ny mpikaroka hahatakatra ny fivoaran’ny Abelisauridae, ny fifandraisan’ireo dinôzôro tao Gondwana, ary ny fomba niainan’ireo mpiremby tao amin’ny tontolo manokana teto Madagasikara tamin’ny faran’ny Crétacé.
Ankoatra izany, ny fôsily maro hita tao amin’ny Formation de Maevarano dia manome fahafahana hianatra bebe kokoa momba ny anatomia, fitomboana, sakafo ary fitondran-tenan’ity dinôzôro ity
🇲🇬 Dinôzôro matanjaka, nify be denticules, ary tantara fôsily mahavariana Majungasaurus dia iray amin’ireo harena paleontolojika mampiavaka an’i Madagasikara!
🦖🇲🇬 Dinôzôro malagasy iray, tantara iray, ary porofo iray lehibe momba ny lasa lavitr’i Madagasikara!

🦖 MEET Majungasaurus crenatissimus THE FAMOUS PREDATOR OF ANCIENT MADAGASCAR!
Did you know that a large meat-eating dinosaur once lived in Madagascar about 70 million years ago, during the Late Cretaceous?
🦖 Who was Majungasaurus?
Majungasaurus crenatissimus was a carnivorous theropod dinosaur belonging to the family Abelisauridae
It lived during the Late Cretaceous in what is now northwestern Madagascar and is one of the best-known theropod dinosaurs from the Southern Hemisphere.
📍 Where did it live!?
Its fossils are known from the Mahajanga Basin of northwestern Madagascar, particularly from the Maevarano Formation
The rocks of this region preserve an extraordinary Late Cretaceous ecosystem containing dinosaurs, turtles and many other animals.
📏 How big was it?
Majungasaurus was much larger than Masiakasaurus and had a powerful, robust body, a large head and strong hind limbs
It was not the largest dinosaur in Madagascar, however. It lived alongside giant herbivorous dinosaurs such as Rapetosaurus krausei (about 6 to 7 m)
🍖 What did it eat?
Majungasaurus was a carnivorous predator and was probably one of the major predators in its ecosystem
Its teeth were adapted for gripping and cutting flesh
But there is something even more fascinating: fossil evidence provides strong evidence that Majungasaurus sometimes fed on members of its own speciesa behavior known as cannibalism
🦷 What was special about its teeth?
This is one of the most interesting features of Majungasaurus!
Its teeth were relatively short and robust, with numerous tiny serrations, or denticles, along their cutting edges
In fact, the species name crenatissimus refers to these numerous serrations
The name comes from the Latin crenatus, meaning “notched” or “toothed,” combined with -issimus, meaning “very much” or “most"
👉 Majungasaurus crenatissimus ≈ “Majungasaurus with very strongly serrated teeth"
🧠 What else made Majungasaurus special?
Its skull is particularly remarkable
Several skulls are exceptionally well preserved, including specimens showing a distinctive dome-like swelling on the top of the skull
This unusual cranial anatomy helped make Majungasaurus one of the most recognizable dinosaurs from Madagascar
🔎 How was it discovered?
The scientific history of Majungasaurus is also fascinating!
In 1896, French paleontologist Charles Depéret described the first known remains and named the species Megalosaurus crenatissimus
Decades later, in 1955, paleontologist René Lavocat recognized that these fossils represented a distinct genus and established the name Majungasaurus
🇲🇬 Where does the name “Majungasaurus” come from?
The name Majungasaurus refers to Majunga, an older name for the region of northwestern Madagascar, combined with the Greek word sauros, meaning “lizard"
👉Majungasaurus ≈ “Majunga lizard.”
🔎 Why is Majungasaurus important?
Majungasaurus crenatissimus* helps scientists understand the evolution and diversity of abelisaurid theropods, as well as the unique ecosystems that existed in Madagascar near the end of the Cretaceous
Its abundant fossil record also provides an exceptional opportunity to study its anatomy, growth, feeding behavior and ecology
🇲🇬 A powerful predator, serrated teeth, a remarkable skull, and an extraordinary fossil record , Majungasaurus is one of Madagascar’s most fascinating prehistoric treasures!
🦖🇲🇬 One Malagasy dinosaur, one incredible fossil record, and another fascinating chapter in Madagascar’s ancient history!
