Approximately 10,000 Garment Workers in Yangon Region Could Lose Their Jobs
20 October | Migrant Times
According to a statement released by the Myanmar Industry, Craft and Services Trade Unions Federation (MICS-TUsF), nearly 10,000 workers from four garment factories in Yangon Region are expected to lose their jobs.
A garment factory employing around 1,000 workers on Kyauk Sein Road, Thardukan Industrial Zone (4), Shwepyithar Township, announced on 22 September that it would close down, and the factory is expected to close permanently on 21 October.
Likewise, a garment factory employing around 1,000 workers at the Pathein Wundauk U Myae Road and Pinzi Min Thar Gyi Corner Road in Hlaingthayar Industrial Zone has announced that it will permanently close on 22 October.
In addition, a garment factory employing more than 5,000 workers in Hle Ngut Chaung, Hmawbi Township, is expected to close permanently on 30 October. According to MICS-TUsF, the factory has been laying off workers since 28 September.
There are also reports that another garment factory employing around 1,000 workers in Mingaladon Industrial Zone will close permanently.
Ko Thet Hnin Aung, General Secretary of MICS-TUsF, told Migrant Times that these factories are expected to close due to a lack of garment orders, unstable import policies, electricity supply problems, and the withdrawal of international brands from Myanmar.
MICS-TUsF stated that the federation is providing assistance to nearly 10,000 garment workers who are at risk of losing their jobs to ensure that the factories carry out their closures responsibly.
At the end of June, the Kings Rich factory in Shwepyithar Township, Yangon Region, which manufactured garments for the H&M brand, also closed down due to a lack of orders, leaving thousands of workers unemployed. Similarly, at the end of September, the Teng Hui Myanmar factory in Hlaingthayar Township closed down after it stopped receiving orders from H&M.
