Summa Werk!: What’s good Werkers?! Fall is coming soon. What I’ve learned this past year was the benefit and the cost of playing year round.
Benefits: Not hard to get going- No long turn around for getting in shape and it’s easier to ramp up the Intensity. The other positive is the different styles of basketball im being exposed to. Different countries and coaches bring different philosophy and methods. The student of basketball is always learning.
Cost- First- There is no offseason for nutrition. Taking a break after a long season or even taking a lighter load each week will cause us to gain more weight. That’s not an issue unless the weight we gain is from fatty foods. The type of food we eat will determine if we are just shedding a few pounds, or if we have to detox our body from excess sugars and our gut from lack of healthy choices. If we aren’t careful we will have to work harder trying to battle the consequences of unheathy choices (inflammation- aches and joint pain).
Treat summer like summer. A battery can only last so long before it needs to be recharged. Sometimes the injury’s we suffer stem from mental stress. There is a certain amount of stress that is to be expected when you enter a season. The key is to find a balance.
- Taking time away to clear your mind
- Being precise about your on court and training time understanding overuse can cause damage
- Ramping up recovery and preparation time.
- spend off time doing hobbies that keep your fresh.
The benefits in skill development and consistency will not be seen if we cannot find a balance. Make sure whatever you decide to do for the summer is equivalent to what an intense offseason training schedule would look like.
Summer Werk!
