To begin with, one never cuts or stitches a sari. It’s a single woven length, and comes off of the loom ready to wear. This represents purity and unity. Variations come in with the color, weave, and drape technique. Some examples include the red-bordered saris from West Bengal, the brocaded saris from Banaras, and the Boggili Posi Kattukodam pleated drape from Andhra Pradesh. There were times in history when a woman brought her own weavers as part of her marriage dowry because her saris were part of her identity.

As an art form and material culture, a study said the Indian sari is a symbol of Indian culture that has lasted for over a millennium.

The first clothes, worn at least 70,000 years ago and perhaps much earlier, were probably made of animal skins and helped protect early humans from the ice ages. Then at some point people learned to weave plant fibers into textiles. But when? The answer is not certain, because cloth is rarely preserved at archaeological sites. Now discoveries at a cave in the Republic of Georgia suggest that this skill was acquired more than 30,000 years ago.

Men will also be cooler in summer if they wear suspenders rather than a belt. However, since they should also go without a coat they may feel conspicuous if wearing suspenders. This dilemma is easily solved by wearing hidden suspenders and a very loose belt. The belt adds to one’s discomfort, not especially because it binds the blood vessels, but rather because it stops the circulation of air within the clothing. Tightly fitting garters do hamper the blood stream, as well as quickly becoming unsanitary themselves. A good grade of men’s hose does not need garters to keep it looking trim. If supporters are necessary, because of thin calves, preference should be given to those which clamp to the shirt and do not constrict the leg, and which, incidentally, keep the shirt trim and secure when the coat is sensibly left off.

Women's clothing—light, thin, ventilated, hygienic—has been rationalized. Men still wear winter clothing in summer, and their clothing reduces their efficiency all the time. A revision on men's clothing is due.

Yes Minister—Party Games (17 December 1984): In the New Year, Sir Humphrey is at lunch with Sir Arnold, and they muse about the two candidates for the Prime Minister job. They conclude that both are interventionists and would seek to try and run the country themselves. In addition, the government Chief Whip believes that each has the capacity to split the party. Therefore, a compromise candidate is needed.

After listing the requisite attributes: no bright ideas, no firm opinions, they realise that they are both thinking of the same person.

Bernard joins them, and Sir Humphrey asks him what he would say to Hacker as the next Prime Minister. Bernard can't quite believe his ears, but the mandarins are serious. They entrust him to keep Hacker on the straight and narrow over the next few weeks.

In the meantime, the other candidates must be persuaded to withdraw, and Sir Arnold believes that this can be accomplished by examining their MI5 files — something one should always do, "if you enjoy a good laugh."
