A monumental moment for inclusive fashion and Malaysian heritage!
Seeing the Dawn Adaptive Kurta and Dhoti Pants Ensemble featured in the Design and Disability exhibition at the iconic V&A Dundee, following its successful run at the V&A London, is deeply emotional.
Usha Nair launched Dawn Adaptive to solve a challenge she understood intimately.She envisioned a space where clothing adapts to the individual, proving that accessible design can be beautiful, culturally expressive, and empowering. This incredible ensemble perfectly captures that vision.
Crafted with sustainability and cultural pride in mind, the piece incorporates repurposed Indian sarees, embroidered table runners, curtains, and bedsheets. To ensure easier independent dressing, it features brilliant adaptive elements like shoulder openings, removable sleeves, and Velcro-fastened trousers, meaning wearers never have to choose between celebrating their identity and dressing independently.
As one of our proud alumni, witnessing her journey from her early showcase with the Malaysia Fashion Creativity Award and her presentation at .my Keretapi Sarong 2023, all the way to these massive global stages across the UK, is truly special. Usha’s work represents visibility, dignity, and the profound message that Malaysian innovation belongs in global conversations on design. It is an immense honour to witness this milestone and see the future of inclusive style recognised worldwide.
