GLASNOST (Russian Cyrillic: гла́сность)
means “openness & transparency”. The term was popularized in the 1980s by Mikhail Gorbachev, the 8th & final leader of the USSR. He adopted the slogan, alongside the obscure term “perestroika”(restructuring) to campaign for increased transparency & efficiency of the Soviet Government.

Notable consequences of Gorbachev’s Glasnost were the collapse of the Berlin Wall in 1989, the overthrowing of Communist governments in the East, and the eventual dismantling of the USSR into smaller independent nation states.
