Before the gemstones.

I started making jewellery when I was about 16.

Back then, I mostly used wooden beads. They were what I could find — and what I could afford.

When I was at university, my friends and I used to walk down to the Leeds Granary Wharf, where there was an artists’ market. I loved looking at what people were making and would come away inspired to make my own pieces.

I made jewellery for myself and as gifts for friends.

This is one of the pieces from those days. Somehow, after all these years, I still have it — a choker or bracelet, tied with a leather strap.

I carried on making jewellery until I was about 23.

Then work and life took over, and I stopped.

I didn’t know then that I would come back to beads almost 30 years later.

Sometimes, it’s simply about the joy of making something for someone.

My cousin was heading to Barbados to visit an old university friend and his family, and I decided to send a little something along with her.

Three sets. Three different people. Three completely different combinations.

One in one of my favourite combinations — Botswana agate and howlite.

One inspired by the colours of a bracelet my cousin had bought for her friend’s wife.

And one in the reds, greens and golds that made me think of the Caribbean.

I may or may not make it to Barbados one day…

but my jewellery is getting there first.

And honestly, I simply enjoyed making these for them.

Where it begins.

This is pretty much what my workspace looks like when I’m creating.

Beads everywhere. Colours being tried. Things moved around until something feels right. Necklaces started but not yet finished. Often, several pieces coming to life at the same time — sometimes one giving way to another.

I don’t always know where I’m going when I start — and that’s part of the fun.

A little experimenting… and quite a bit of beautiful mess.

Some things stay with us, waiting to become something new.

I have had this marble pendant since I was 18 years old.

For decades, it has been part of my life. And recently, I found myself returning to it — this time, not simply to wear it, but to create around it.

I designed this necklace around the pendant, bringing together colours and stones that allowed an old piece to become something new.

Perhaps that is what I love most about creating.

Things don't always have to begin again from nothing. Sometimes, we begin with something that has been with us all along — and discover what else it can become.

This feels like the right piece with which to begin Labour of Love by Kala.

Different. And still becoming.
