Portraits on Silk
In India, the fashion of using faces and human figures on clothing has roots in ancient textiles. Artist Raja Ravi Varma’s mass-produced oleographs of gods and goddesses eventually transitioned from wall art to textile patterns, particularly in sarees, making "faces on fabric" a more common visual.

With the arrival of printing technology in the mid-1800s, studios like the Calcutta Art Studio began mass-producing images of deities and historical figures.

The shift toward faces as a "fashion statement" (rather than just religious or political) gained momentum with the rise of Indian Pop Art in the 2000s.
Kitsch & Pop Culture: Designers like Manish Arora and Masaba Gupta popularized "kitsch" fashion, featuring bold, colorful prints of iconic faces—such as classic Bollywood stars or traditional Indian motifs—on everything from sarees to street wear.

Portraits in Our Designs
The depiction of faces on fabric in fashion has evolved right from the 18th century to modern graphic designing.
Portraiture was used in textiles, particularly in tapestry and rich fabrics, to show status.

The Mughal miniature art featuring faces (portraits) flourished from the 16th to 19th centuries, merging Persian refinement with Indian naturalism.

The 1920s to 1930s saw fashion heavily influenced by Surrealism, making statements of status and individuality
In recent times, one of the most iconic designers to use faces on fabric was Elsa Schiaparelli, specifically in her 1937 collaboration with the surrealist artist Jean Cocteau.
Miuccia Prada used large-scale, colorful murals of female faces on her dresses to explore themes of femininity and power

But this time, for my design I chose restraint over richnessI just wanted to approach it differently.
I decided to simplify it, clear out the colour and pick out just it's elements,
and strictly concentrate on the outlines. This interpretation became "Line Art" the lines specifically followed the edges of shapes to define their volume, creating a Contour Drawing

The design became alive on the silk, we chose my favourite squares, woven zari on silk organza for the pallu.
While the one sari remains a prized possession, we recreated the customised kaftans for quite a few client's

I’ve always been drawn to architecture — to the poetry of space, the discipline of clean lines, and the quiet power of simplicity.
Looking back at my work over the past nine years, I see a clear language emerge. A natural inclination toward geometry. Structured, deliberate, and deeply intuitive.
Rooted in Indian mythological art and layered with abstraction, these compositions often find their rhythm in squares — a subtle nod to cubism. This interplay allows me to move beyond conventional, fixed perspectives, while remaining anchored in the richness of classical painting.
A balance between freedom and form — where every piece honours its origin, yet speaks in a distinctly contemporary voice.

Kimkara DESIGN 🟥
I have combined the geometric square art with the enduring story from the Hindu Mythology 'Samudra Manthan'

The movement is primarily called , founded by Malevich, which focused on fundamental geometric forms like squares, circles, and lines. It is a form of Geometric Abstraction, often featuring simplistic, non-objective shapes.

Marrying Suprematism, emphasizing "the supremacy of pure artistic traditional art.

Similar geometric art, particularly with squares, is part of broader movements like De Stijl (Piet Mondrian) and is generally categorized as Geometric Abstraction.

Bangkok feels like a spark—unexpected, exhilarating, and full of promise. I arrive ready… for the new, the unknown, and everything in between.

As I begin this chapter, it feels only natural to revisit those beginnings—the one-of-a-kind pieces that carried my earliest dreams, my instinct, my voice before it was refined.

Sharing my very first design, based on the painting "Samudra Manthan" by . A gentle walk down memory lane… to honour where it all started, before everything that followed.
Because sometimes, the most powerful way forward… is to look back with feeling. ✨
