Want some advice from a Lactation Consultant on colostrum collection? You’ve come to the right post 🤗

Here are some tips from the lovely Hannah on all things colostrum, thank you so much for sharing with us 🥰

💛 Ideally baby is getting colostrum directly from you after birth (latching or expressing) - however if there are birth complications or baby needs to be supplemented for any reason, you can use your own collected colostrum!!

💛 When giving your collected colostrum, it is important to add in hand expression or pumping anytime baby is supplemented!! This will help establish and maintain your milk supply!

💛 I would highly recommend contacting your hospital before bringing your colostrum with you when you give birth! If you won’t have access to a freezer for your colostrum it may thaw - and when this happens it will only be good for 24 hours. Don’t let your hard work go to waste!!

💛 If baby doesn’t end up needing your collected colostrum after birth - you can keep it in the freezer and give it any time during baby’s first year of life! A lot of parents prefer to give it anytime baby is sick!

Warming your colostrum to room temperature is super easy! 👍🏼💛

If you’re in a pinch, simply holding it and rolling it around in your hand for a few minutes will do the trick! Or, if you’re looking for a faster method just pop the collector in a cup of warm (not hot) water for a minute or two! You can even combine both methods, and roll the collector in your hand while running it under warm water 💧👏🏽
