Most Namibians have never been inside the Sperrgebiet.

For more than a century, this vast stretch of Namibia’s southern desert has been largely closed to the public. Once fiercely guarded for the diamonds beneath its sands, much of it is now protected as part of the Tsau //Khaeb (Sperrgebiet) National Park, and access remains restricted.

For most of us, it is a place known only from the outside.

For our family, the connection is much closer to home.

Our grandfather was born and grew up in Kolmanskop, when the now-abandoned diamond town was still a living community. The stories he carried from those years have become part of our own — stories of the people, places and peculiarities of life in one of Namibia’s most extraordinary corners.

Sperrgebiet takes its name from this place for a reason.

Over the coming months, we want to share some of those stories with you. Not simply to retell the past, but because that history continues to find its way into what we create today.

VACANCY – EXPERIENCED LEATHER CRAFTER

Sperrgebiet Leather & Jewellery Atelier is looking for an experienced Leather Crafter / Leatherworker to join our growing workshop in Swakopmund.

We are looking for someone who has a genuine feel for working with leather and, most importantly, is experienced in sewing leather products using an industrial sewing machine.

The ideal candidate should have:
▶ Proven experience working with leather
▶ Good knowledge of leather cutting, preparation and assembly
▶ Experience operating a sewing machine on leather
▶ Good understanding of stitching, edges, skiving, gluing and finishing
▶ Excellent attention to detail and pride in workmanship
▶ Ability to work accurately from patterns and measurements
▶ Ability to work independently and meet deadlines
▶ A practical, hands-on approach and willingness to learn new techniques
▶ Experience making bags, belts, wallets, cases or similar leather goods will be an advantage

The work:
You will be involved in producing a variety of handcrafted leather goods.
This is an opportunity for someone who enjoys working with their hands and wants to be part of a growing, creative workshop where quality matters more than quantity.

We are looking for someone who:
➡ Can work with their hands.
➡ Can work with precision.
➡ Can operate a sewing machine.
➡ And knows that "good enough" isn't good enough.
