The Market Woman ▲ Ọnụ bụ ọgwụ ọnụ 🛒 - “The mouth is the medicine of the mouth”

You’ve seen her. 7am at the market before the city wakes up. Prices memorized. Credit extended to neighbors she’s known for years. The informal economy, the one that actually feeds the country runs through her hands.

But look at her eyes.

The naira is pressed across them. She has a voice. Money took her sight. Not a person. Not a law. Just the slow accumulation of inflation, devaluation, subsidy removal, policy decisions made in rooms she was never invited into. The Executive, the Legislative, the Judiciary. The triangle sitting on top of everything she built from below.

In 1929, women like her marched. They shut down markets. They moved as one. They were silenced then too.

Now the suppression needs no enforcer. The system doesn’t need to gag you if it can keep the naira in front of your eyes. If it can keep you focused on survival, you’ll never look up long enough to ask who designed the game.

She feeds everyone. The system never asks her name. 🎴

CHAKAM: A Reimagination of WHOT
Card 6 - CHAKAM ♛
Ko mai arziki yana neman arziki 🫴🏾 - “Even the wealthy seek more wealth”

You know the bowl. You’ve seen it at the traffic light. The street corner. The mosque on Jummat. But look closer, it didn’t stay out there.

It’s in the group chat. It’s omo show me love na. It’s the uncle with a job still looking for his helper. It’s the country sitting on oil, iron, gold, lithium still going bowl in hand to the IMF. Still negotiating from its knees.

But here’s what nobody says out loud, it stopped being need a long time ago. It became entitlement. The belief that someone somewhere owes you. The West owes you. Your rich friend owes you. The world owes you. The beggi beggi culture runs top to bottom, from the streets to the senate and somewhere along the way, begging became a right, not a last resort.

We have so much, yet we can’t see that

Card 20 in Whot is called CHAKAM aka I need card. The most powerful move in the deck. He holds it. He is still asking. The money covering his eyes. He cannot see what he is holding.

You are the one being asked.
What are you holding that you can’t see? 🎴

CHAKAM: A Reimagination of WHOT Card 4
The Crown ★ Ìràwọ̀ tó lọ, ọ̀run ló gbà ✨ - “The star that left, the sky claimed it”

She didn’t leave because she wanted to.
She left because staying felt like a prison. But leaving? Leaving meant floating in a sky with no ground beneath her. Unrooted. Unnamed. Lost in someone else’s atmosphere.
Every kid feels like they need to go to become the next Virgil, the next Slawn, like distance is the only path to greatness. But this card is here to say: you can fly and still be rooted. You can be great and still be home.
The japa culture was sold to us like it’s the answer. Like the grass is always greener on the other side. But sometimes the grass is greener where you water it.
She wears Nigeria on her body and England on her chest. The smile is practiced, load-bearing.
In one hand held up like a brand endorsement, a tube of bleaching cream. A lighter woman on the packaging. She is not looking at her. She is at war with her. Fighting who she is for who she has been told to become.

First the land. Then the labor. Then the resources. Then the art. Now the people.

The fine girl lightens to be visible. The bright student packs a bag. The country mints its brightest, polishes them and the world collects them at the border and calls it opportunity.

The crown was always hers. It just got westernized, losing its essence, its root. 🎴

CHAKAM: A Reimagination of WHOT
Card 2: The Box ◼️
Ẹni tó kọ ẹ ọ̀un lọ́ ní yẹ 📚 “Whoever teaches you, owns you”

You sat in that classroom. You memorised the dates, the names, the theories. You knew the periodic table. You knew the kings and queens of the world. You could tell me who Albert Einstein is.
But could you name one African scholar before colonisation? One mathematician, one philosopher, one artist from your own soil before they arrived and decided what was worth knowing?

The teacher is blindfolded. The child is silenced. The grade sheet says F across every subject, not one indigenous name on the list. And the child learns quickly: fitting in the box is survival. The box is not a cage. The box is just how things are.
The school uniform is colonial inheritance pressed onto the mind every morning. Nothing changed at independence only the faces behind the desk. The curriculum stayed. The blindfold stayed.
We were taught what they deemed worthy of learning.
The mind is institutionalized. 🎴

CHAKAM: A Reimagination of WHOT
Card 5- The Home 🔵

OTU ONYE ADIGHI AZU NWA 🫂 meaning: “One person cannot raise a child”

The family dressed up. The family showed up. And somewhere between the performance and the truth, the inheritance passed through.

The community raises the child. Or at least, it should. But when the culture turns inward and everyone is for themselves, who is still showing up?

The loop begins at home. 🎴

It continues through the same hand on the same shoulder.

A house isn’t just walls and windows. It’s a mixtape of every version of ourselves: love unlocked, stories leaking, prayers hanging, games still plugged in. Every corner holds a shrine to who we’ve been. Every reflection, a reminder. We carry it all the ghosts, the heroes, the light we built from scraps.
