Choosing the right fabric is just as important as choosing the right style. As a fashion designer, one thing I always tell my clients is this: “The fabric can make or break your entire look.”
Today, while sourcing fabrics at the market, I had to explain this to a client during a video call — and I realized a lot of people need to understand this too 👇
✨ HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT FABRIC FOR YOUR BODY TYPE:
Not every fabric will sit well on every body, and that’s okay. The goal is to pick fabrics that enhance your shape, not fight against it.
👗 1. If you have a curvy body:
Go for fabrics that hug and define your shape without adding too much bulk.
✔️ Best choices: Stretch fabrics, crepe, soft lace
❌ Avoid: Very stiff fabrics that make you look boxy
👗 2. If you’re slim or petite:
You want fabrics that add volume and structure to your body.
✔️ Best choices: Ankara, organza, layered fabrics
❌ Avoid: Extremely clingy fabrics that make you look flatter
👗 3. If you have a fuller body:
Choose fabrics that flow nicely and give structure without clinging too much.
✔️ Best choices: Silk, chiffon, soft cotton blends
❌ Avoid: Very shiny or overly tight fabrics that highlight every detail
👗 4. If you want to hide certain areas:
Your fabric choice matters a lot here.
✔️ Go for: Matte, darker, and structured fabrics
❌ Avoid: Thin, shiny, or overly stretchy materials

Always think of fabric as the foundation of your outfit.
Before you even start sewing, ask yourself:
👉 “Will this fabric flatter my body?”
