Measuring a child for a ball gown requires taking precise body measurements to ensure a proper fit. Here's how to do it:
What Youβll Need:
A soft measuring tape
A notebook or phone to record measurements
The child wearing lightweight clothing or fitted undergarments
Someone to help if needed
Key Measurements:
1. Chest β Measure around the fullest part of the chest, just under the arms, keeping the tape parallel to the floor.
2. Waist β Find the natural waistline (usually the narrowest part of the torso) and measure around it. The child can bend sideways to find this spot.
3. Shoulder to Waist β Measure from the top of the shoulder (where the seam of a dress would sit) down to the natural waistline.
4. Waist to Floor β Measure from the natural waistline down to the floor while the child is standing straight. Have them wear the shoes theyβll wear with the gown.
5. Dress Length (Shoulder to Hem) β Measure from the top of the shoulder down to the desired hem length (e.g., ankle, floor, or train).
6. Arm Length (if long sleeves are needed) β Measure from the shoulder down to the wrist while the arm is slightly bent.
7. Neck Circumference β Measure around the base of the neck if the dress has a high neckline or collar.
Tips for Accuracy:
Ensure the measuring tape is snug but not tight.
The child should stand naturally and not hold their breath.
If in doubt, add a little extra room for comfort, especially for growing children.
