A lawyer representing IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, Barrister Nnaemeka Ejiofor, has raised serious concerns over the alleged prolonged detention of a woman identified as Onyeaka Ozioma Elizabeth.

Ejiofor claimed that Elizabeth was arrested by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) at 33 Onitsha in Anambra State about five years and three months ago before being transferred to the WAWA Military Detention Centre in Kainji, Niger State.

According to the lawyer, he recently encountered Elizabeth at the Federal High Court in Abuja, where she allegedly told him that she had been unable to communicate with her family or gain access to legal representation since her arrest.

Ejiofor said Elizabeth provided him with her sister's phone number. He claimed that when he contacted the woman, she initially struggled to believe that her sister was still alive until she was shown a video confirming her identity.

The lawyer questioned how anyone could allegedly remain in detention for such an extended period without regular contact with relatives or access to counsel. He described the reported circumstances as both unlawful and dehumanising.

Ejiofor also expressed concern about Elizabeth's appearance, saying she seemed visibly frightened when he encountered her.

He further questioned why she was reportedly moved from Anambra to a detention facility in Kainji and later brought to Abuja for trial, putting significant distance between her and her family.

The lawyer also questioned whether her reported prosecution was connected to her alleged Biafran identity, drawing comparisons with other regional identities in Nigeria.

The allegations raise important questions about the circumstances of Elizabeth's arrest, the legal basis for her prolonged detention, her access to legal representation and whether her family was properly informed about her whereabouts.
