PEOPLE, THE RUNGS ON YOUR LADDER (2)
She stayed till 12am with candlelight, that's when I knew.
I told you how my former boss allowed me to borrow her mannequin to take pictures of the dresses I made before I got mine, and I emphasized the importance of keeping relationships and treasuring people.
About a year later, when we finally got a space for the Zurumy brand and started admitting apprentices, I realized something. For many who do this, youâll attest to the fact that the pool is mixed. Humans are just being human. And because youâre training people, you hope they donât just learn the tailoring skill, but are also armed with soft skills that aid their journey. Patience becomes a very vital tool.
I think itâs more or less training yourself as you train people, because thereâs virtually no category of people you wonât meet. But there was this particular apprentice I trained in 2022. She was unconventionally exceptional. She carried an aura of joy and laughter, was humble and diligent. She made so many sacrifices and worked overtime even when I didnât ask her to.
I remember one of those weeks we had a lot of orders and deliveries to make. As someone working tirelessly to redefine the narrative that tailors disappoint, I decided to stay back at the store to work all night. She offered to help too. But that night, we waited till 12am and there was no power supply. I didnât have a generator set then, and we had no backup because power had been consistent that week. We had to use candlelight to work through the night, and we still delivered the dresses successfully.
Thereâs no one who wouldnât hold such a relationship dear. Even though she was under me at the time, she handled the business like it was hers. I allowed her to stay with us after her training period. She went for NYSC, came back, and worked with us as staff before finally moving out of Bauchi.
In every relationship youâre in, always seek ways to add and not just take. Make an indelible mark and create pleasant memories. Life would be more beautiful if we could ditch selfishness and make more sacrifices.
