I came across this beautiful 3D outfit sketch by Prudent Atelier and I honestly had to stop and appreciate the creativity behind it.
Look at how the design has already been brought to life visually before a single piece of fabric is cut. The front, the back, the colour combination, the placement of the details, everything has been thought through.
And this is one reason I believe more tailors should make sketching part of their sewing process.
Create the outfit first, then create it with fabric.
Sketching gives you the opportunity to see your idea before committing fabric to it. You can test colours, play around with details, adjust the design, build focus and have a clearer direction before you start sewing.
Most importantly, it can save you time and reduce unnecessary trial and error and mistakes.
And no, your sketch doesn't have to look like this. You don't have to be a professional fashion illustrator. Even a simple sketch that helps you communicate and understand the design in your head can make a difference.
So I'm curious, how many tailors here sketch their outfits before sewing?
Maybe it's time we started putting the idea on paper before putting it on fabric.
