The next step after teaching your age 5 to break longer words into chunks is to move from decoding individual words to reading connected sentences fluently.
PART 4: FROM DECODING WORDS TO READING SENTENCES FLUENTLY
STEP 1: Start with very short sentences
Use words the child has already learned:
I can run.
The cat is big.
I see a dog.
The sun is hot.
Dad has a bag.
The boy can jump.
The goal is not just for the child to pronounce each word. Teach them to read the whole sentence smoothly and understand what it means.
STEP 2: Add one new word at a time
Start with:
The cat runs.
Then:
The little cat runs.
Then:
The little cat runs fast.
Then:
The little cat runs very fast.
This gradually increases reading stamina without overwhelming the child.
STEP 3: Teach them to stop treating every word as an isolated word
A child may read:
The / boy / is / playing / football.
But fluent reading should gradually become:
The boy is playing football.
Teach them to group words into meaningful phrases.
For example:
The little boy / is playing football.
My mother / is cooking dinner.
The big dog / ran away.
This is where reading begins to sound natural.
STEP 4: Introduce punctuation
Teach your child that punctuation tells the reader how the sentence should sound.
Full stop:
The boy is happy.
Question mark:
Where is the boy?
Exclamation mark:
What a big dog!
Don't allow the child to read every sentence with the same voice.
STEP 5: Build sentence patterns
Give them a pattern they already understand and change one part.
I can see a cat.
I can see a dog.
I can see a bird.
I can see a frog.
Then:
I can see a big cat.
I can see a big dog.
This develops both fluency and sentence comprehension.
STEP 6: Move from sentences to a short passage
Once the child can comfortably read several sentences, give them a short passage.
The Little Boy
Tom has a little dog.
The dog is brown.
Tom likes to play with his dog.
They run in the garden every morning.
Tom gives the dog some food after they play.
