The history of bonnets dates back to the Middle Ages, when women wore a variety of head coverings to protect their hair and skin from the sun and cold weather. One of the earliest forms of bonnets was the coif, a cloth cap that covered the hair and neck. Later, women began wearing hoods and veils, which eventually evolved into the modern-day bonnet. In the 18th century, women started wearing elaborate bonnets with wide brims, which became known as mob caps. These were popular among the working class and were often worn while doing household chores.
