Our aim is to equip young Nigerians with the necessary skill sets to grow and expand the leather sector, but also to enhance their own economic outcomes. We are honoured to be driving this change.

It’s been a while, but we’re back to give a little update on everything that’s been going on behind the scenes until the physical rollout of Kafawa 2.0.

As some of you know, our amazing team has been hard at work planning the Fifth edition of your favourite annual retail showcase - The Lagos Leather Fair. Since it’s inception, the Fair has been a platform of visibility for both starting and established designers in the leather space.

Following the conclusion of the pilot edition of Kafawa, there was no way we could carry out this year’s Fair without providing a similar push for some of the hardworking trainees that participated.

During the course of the Kafawa initiative, we held a competition via Kafawa’s Project Defence to qualify our trainees for LLF 5’s “Emerging Designers”. 21 people qualified and only 11 were selected based on the quality of their work, their finishing and their designs.

At the end, two groups of “Emerging Designers” were chosen in the Handbags & Footwear categories based on trainees who scored the highest in the Project defence.

Speaking at the event, Mrs Femi Olayebi (Creative Director, Femi Handbags), explained that through initiatives like this, the company has sought out ways to level the playing field and improve access for MSMEs operating in the leather space. The goal, therefore, for Kafawa is to drive the growth of the leather sector and improve youth unemployment rates.
