One of the aspects I love most about fashion as a skill is the art of measurement taking.
To many people, measurements may seem like just numbers on a tape, but to a true designer, they are the language of fit, structure, balance, and precision. Before fabric becomes fashion, it begins with accurate measurements.
One thing fashion has taught me over the years is that mastery starts with understanding your measuring tape. If you cannot read your tape well, you may struggle to interpret the body correctly; and if the body is wrongly interpreted, the garment can never sit right.
Over my years of study and practice, I have discovered something interesting which many of us on this side of the world often assume that the metric side of the tape is difficult or complicated. We tend to avoid it, thinking inches are easier.
But in truth, I have found the opposite.
The inch system can actually be more complex to understand because of its fractions, quarters, eighths, sixteenths and without a solid grasp of those divisions, errors can easily happen… unless, of course, you are naturally inclined like a mathematician.
The metric side, however, speaks with simplicity and precision. It is direct. It is structured. It trains your eyes and mind toward accuracy.
AND IN FASHION, ACCURACY IS EVERYTHING.
Measurement taking is not merely a technical process; it is discipline.
It is observation.
It is interpretation.
It is understanding proportions.
It is learning how the body is designed before attempting to design for the body.
A good tailor sews.
A great designer understands measurements.
That is why I often tell aspiring designers:
Do not rush past measurement taking. Master it. Study it. Practice it. Respect it.
Because many fitting problems are not sewing problems but they are measurement problems.
For me, measurement taking is where craftsmanship begins.
It is where excellence is first drafted.
It is where confidence in garment construction is born.
At KHODED WEARS, we believe precision is part of purpose, and even in measurements, excellence is ministry.
