STOP CALLING THE PARCEL A “WAYBILL”!

Have you ever heard someone say:

❌ “I sent a waybill to Lagos.”

This is a very common expression in Nigeria, but there is an important distinction you need to understand.

Let's clear up the confusion between PARCEL, WAYBILL and WEIGHBILL. 👇

📌 WHAT IS A WAYBILL?

A waybill is a document containing information about goods being transported from one place to another.

It can contain details such as:

📍 The sender's information
📍 The recipient's information
📍 Description of the goods
📍 Destination
📍 Delivery details
📍 Tracking or reference information

So, the waybill is the document, not the parcel itself.

For example:

✅ I sent a parcel to Lagos with a waybill.

✅ The courier company issued a waybill for the package.

✅ You can use the waybill number to track the shipment.

📌 THEN WHAT IS THE PARCEL?

The parcel or package is the actual item or collection of items being transported.

For example, if you send a box containing clothes from Lagos to Abuja:

📍 The box containing the clothes = parcel/package

📍 The document identifying and accompanying the shipment = waybill

So:

❌ I sent a waybill to Abuja.

✅ I sent a parcel to Abuja with a waybill.

♦️WAYBILL vs WEIGHBILL

This is where another confusion comes in.

📍 WAYBILL

Waybill is the standard term for a transport document associated with the shipment of goods.

WAY + BILL

It has nothing to do with weighing something.

📍 WEIGHBILL

Weighbill is not the standard term you should use when you mean a waybill.

The word weigh means to measure how heavy something is.

So don't confuse:

❌ Waybill with weighbill

They are not simply two spellings of the same word.

SO, WHAT SHOULD YOU SAY?

❌ I sent a waybill.

✅ I sent a parcel/package with a waybill.

❌ Send me the weighbill.

✅ Send me the waybill.
If you mean the document used for the shipment.

Remember:

📍 Parcel = what you send.
