My 3 years old daughter asked me" mummy you made this bag"? she actually saw me when i was sewing it o, so i answered yes.

And she repeated" i said you tried" and i was wow, thank you very much and God bless you.

she shocked me sha, for even admiring the bag and commending me. Imagine a 3 years old.

Sewing terms every every beginner should know👇

✂️ 1. Notch
A notch is a small mark (usually a tiny cut or chalk mark) on fabric pieces.
👉 Purpose:

It helps you match pieces correctly when sewing.

👉 Example:
When joining a sleeve to an armhole, the notches tell you this part meets this part.

🧠 Think of it like a “guide point” so you don’t sew wrongly.

📏 2. Drafting
Drafting means drawing your pattern on paper (or directly on fabric) using measurements.

👉 It is the foundation of sewing.

👉 Example:
Before you cut a blouse, you draft the shape using bust, waist, shoulder, etc.

🧠 No drafting = guessing = bad fit.

🧵 3. Hem
A hem is the finished edge of a garment (usually folded and sewn).

👉 Found at:
Bottom of gowns
Sleeves
Trousers

👉 Purpose:
Makes clothing neat
Prevents fabric from fraying

🧠 Raw edge = rough work
Hemmed edge = professional finish

👗 4. Thigh
The thigh is the upper part of the leg.

👉 In sewing: Used when making trousers, skirts, or dresses.
👉 Measurement: Around the fullest part of the upper leg.

🧠 Important for comfort—too tight = can’t walk well 😅

👖 5. Crotch
The crotch is the area where the two legs of a trouser meet.

👉 Very important in trouser drafting.

👉 Includes:
Front crotch
Back crotch

👉 If done wrong:
Pulling
Tightness
Discomfort

🧠 This is where beginners make plenty mistakes—so pay attention here.

🧶 6. Weave
Weave refers to how threads are arranged in fabric.

👉 Types:
Plain weave
Twill weave
Satin weave

👉 Why it matters:
Affects stretch
Affects strength
Affects how you cut fabric

🧠 Also relates to grain line (direction you must cut fabric)

🔥 EXTRA TERMS EVERY BEGINNER MUST KNOW

✂️ Seam
Where two fabrics are joined together.

📐 Seam Allowance
Extra fabric left for sewing (usually ½ inch or 1 inch).

👉 Without it, your cloth will shrink after sewing.

📌 Grain Line
The direction of the fabric threads.
👉 Always cut along grain for a neat, balanced outfit.

🧷 Dart
A fold sewn into fabric to shape it (especially for bust or waist).

🧵 Stitch
The actual thread line made by your machine or hand.

📏 Ease
Extra space added so the cloth is not too tight.

If you are tailor who always wait for customers to bring clothes before you work, why don't you try adding something else to your business ?

Something like ready to wear, making and selling of caps(headgear), Ankara tote bag, apron and even throw pillows, there are so many things you do with your sewing machine instead of waiting for customers.

Even if you are a beginner, you can make them and sell, people who sells can come and be buying from you to resell, don't sit down and wait for customers, then start complaining of no sells.

i have decided to put together a class on how to make beautiful headgears(caps) and Ankara tote bag and i even added how to make apron as bonus. All this doesn't go out of fashion.

caps, people use it everyday, i passed through sabo market in ikorodu here recently, and i saw a woman selling only the caps, so tell me, if it wasn't moving, would she be selling it? The answer is No.

I almost didn’t post this… 😩

Because at first, I felt it wasn’t “perfect enough.”

But then I looked again… and I said, wait… this is actually BEAUTIFUL. 😍

This cap right here? Handmade. Carefully pleated. Intentionally styled. No rushing. No shortcuts.

Just skill + patience + growth. ✂️🧵

See that rich purple fabric? See how the folds sit confidently? And that brooch placement? 🔥

This is not just a cap… This is a statement piece.

And let me say this to every beginner reading this 👇🏽

You don’t have to be perfect to show your work. You just have to be progressing.

Because the truth is— The same thing you’re doubting right now, Someone else is willing to PAY for it.

So post it. Show it. Own your craft.
✨ If you love this piece, let me know in the comments ✨ Would you rock this? Yes or No?

If you are not skilled in calculations or have no liking for them, then tailoring might not be your best option.

“The mistake I made when I was a newbie in sewing…”

Let me be honest with you…

When I first started sewing, I thought the goal was to just finish clothes fast.

I didn’t care too much about neatness.

I didn’t pay attention to proper measurements.

As long as the dress looked “okay” and the customer smiled small, I felt I was doing well.

Big mistake.

Because what I didn’t realize then was this:

People may collect your work… but they won’t come back if the finishing is poor.

I remember making a dress I was so proud of… until I saw it later on someone else.
The fitting was off.

The seams weren’t sitting well.

The whole thing just didn’t look professional.
That day humbled me.

I had to go back and learn what I skipped-

• Accurate measurements
• Proper ironing while sewing
• Clean finishing (very important!)
• Patience

Because sewing is not just about “joining fabric”…
It’s about creating something that speaks before you even say a word.

If you’re just starting, please learn from me:

Don’t rush to produce quantity, build QUALITY first.

Even if it takes you longer…
Even if others seem faster than you…

Your neat work will announce you in rooms you haven’t entered yet.

Tell me, what mistake have YOU made as a beginner? Let’s help each other grow ❤️

🚨 LET'S TALK ABOUT DARTS…THE SECRET BEHIND A WELL FITTED OUTFITS

You see that difference between a “just okay” dress and a “WOW, this fits perfectly” dress?

👉 The magic is often in the DARTS.

If you’re a beginner in sewing and you don’t understand darts yet…

you’re honestly missing a BIG piece of the puzzle.

✂️ What is a Dart?

A dart is a folded and stitched part of a fabric that helps shape the cloth to fit the body perfectly.

Think of it as…

👉 The architect of fitting in sewing.

📌 Types of Darts you should know and their uses:

✔️ Bust Dart – helps the fabric sit well around the bust

✔️ Waist Dart – gives that snatched, fitted look

✔️ Shoulder Dart – shapes the upper chest area

✔️ Armhole Dart – used instead of bust dart sometimes

✔️ French Dart – long dart from waist to bust (very classy 👌)

💡 What are Darts used for?

✨ To shape garments to the body
✨ To eliminate excess fabric
✨ To give that clean, professional finishing
✨ To enhance curves (yes! that fitted look you love 😉)

👗 Clothes that NEED darts:

✔️ Fitted gowns
✔️ Blouses & shirts
✔️ Pencil skirts
✔️ Corset-style dresses

🚫 Clothes that DON’T really need darts:

✔️ Loose gowns (boubou, kaftan, etc.)
✔️ Oversized styles
✔️ Flowy dresses
✔️ Some children’s wear

If your outfit always looks “somehow”…
Check it well — you might be skipping your darts 👀

I am Angela Ukeme Designs — a bespoke and ready-to-wear tailor, a tutor, and your fashion growth coach. I don’t just sew, I teach you how to stand out ✂️✨

Below is an attached image of types of darts, the red lines on each image are the dart👇

07/04/2026

FOR BEGINNERS.

Measurements to be divided by 4
👇
bust circumference -e.g bust 40÷4=10

Hip circumference

waist circumference

underbust circumference

measurements to be divided by 2
👇

shoulder -e.g shoulder 16÷2=8

armhole
Round sleeve
Ni**le to Ni**le.

Now these are some formulas to get some measurements:

bust span or Ni**le to Ni**le =bust circuference ÷4 minus 1.5

Armholes for any size
bust circumference ÷6 + 1.5

crotch depth for trousers=
Hip circumference ÷4
for jumpsuit or high waist=
Hip cirumference ÷3

Go thtough it and know it.

CONTINUATION(part 2)

I sought out an alternative venue to advance my knowledge, paid the associated costs, and initiated my learning journey.

This is an account of my experiences, which I am sharing, particularly for the benefit of latecomers. If you miss the first part, check it out, i posted the part 1.

I met one person there, who happened to be someone i know already, then later another person joined us, she was complete novice.

the woman was doing well at first, whenever she was cutting , she would always call us to come, if anyone asked question, she was always explaining with patience, until something entered into her.

she changed, she was always taking clothes home to cut on weekends, then bring them to shop on mondays and ask us to sew, at first we thought it was because of the festive work, so that we can meet up but after the festive season, it continued, that was when i knew that e don pass becareful.

She had this jumpsuit pattern( the one without joining on the waist) i asked her to teach me how to cut it, she said ok but she never did, even the pattern sef, she removed it from the place she normally put it and all other patterns.

well to cut long story short, i left there before the time i was suppose to leave, and after a while, the other girl that came after me left and the first girl,(the one i met there)was the only person with her, she wanted to leave but she was still owing the woman some money, but as soon as the money was paid, she too left.

please madam/oga,you see that apprentice you have with you, it is your responsibility to teach that person the work he/she came to learn from you , as long as you collected money from them, teach them and do not hoard your knowledge , i know there are some that are not serious, but you just do your best and leave the rest to God.

Whoever is serious will gain and whoever is not serious will not, with this i rest my case. See you on my next post.
