Is Ankara Really African?
Ankara fashion has been in "vogue" for a quite number of years now and is widely accepted and loved mostly in African countries and some other continents have started happily embracing it.
In Nigeria, Ankara is actually a staple, it is do common to us that naturally you would want to believe it originated from Nigeria. But this would only be quite far from the truth.
Nigeria does not own Ankara.
Prints, Colors, Designs and Patterns. These are some of the things that comes to your mind when you think about Fashion in Africa.
Throughout the years, we have seen the development of Fashion in Africa.
From the Damask to dry lace, from Adire-Eleso to Kente, every material is being worn with a particular goal in mind which tries to tell us a story. A story of pride, tradition and more importantly deeply rooted history.
As indicated by history, clothes have not generally been worn in Africa. From what the history books reveal to us, it has been stated that the primary locating of garments in Africa goes back to 2000 B.C.E. The precision of this report can not be truly established based on the fact that there aren't much written material on the subject matter.
But the origin of the Ankara material can be reported precisely and accurately.
The Ankara fabric for the most part are made popular by countries in West Africa, for example, Ghana, Nigeria and Senegal. But even though Africans made Ankara popular, it was not initially from any part of Africa.
The Ankara fabric was made in Indonesia. For as long as it could be remember, the Indonesian locals have made Batik. Slaves and hired soldiers enlisted from West Africa to be a part of the Indonesian armed force loved Batik and came back to West Africa with the material.
The different versions made in Indonesia and Europe were not wildly accepted by the people and with this rejection, the manufacturer at that point came down to West Africa markets to showcase their wears.
Market women had taken a liking to the materials and even made better patterns of the Cloth. With this discovery came the birth of Ankara.
It was adopted and made popular by West Africa and based on this popularity, we are now able to look at Runways all over the world and see the inspiration for Ankara.
We are able to see the inspiration of the Ankara cloth everywhere. Women all over West Africa today wear Ankara casually.
Ankaras are worn at weddings to identify friends of the bride and groom, at birthdays to identify family and friends of the celebrant and even at funerals to celebrate the departed.
Now that is the brief history and original of Ankara.
