No one told me that tailoring comes with its own set of unwritten rules, hidden lessons, and mysteries. These are things you only learn through experience—sometimes the easy way, but most times, the hard way.
🧵 1. Never sew on credit.
Many times, a client may never return to pick up the outfit, leaving you with wasted time, effort, and money.
📏 2. Always inspect and measure the fabric before taking measurements.
Never assume the fabric is complete. A shortage discovered during cutting could leave you paying for the client's mistake.
🎓 3. Never assume you know it all.
No matter how skilled you are, there is always someone better. Staying humble keeps you learning and growing.
🪡 4. Never let your sewing machine know you're in a hurry.
That's usually when the thread starts cutting, the scissors keep falling, stitches become uneven, the bobbin case acts up, and a 10-minute job suddenly takes hours.
💰 5. Collect outstanding balances before delivery.
Trust is good, but experience has taught many tailors that unpaid balances often become forgotten balances.
😓 6. The needle always strikes when you're already exhausted.
After hours of sewing, fatigue sets in, and somehow the machine needle finds its way to your finger.
🔥 7. Ironing can humble even the most experienced tailor.
Just when you think you've mastered it, an expensive fabric gets scorched, wiping out all your profit on the job.
⏰ 8. Late delivery can be costly.
Delays can lead to lost clients, damaged reputations, and sometimes serious confrontations with impatient customers.
🤦♂️ 9. The mysterious disappearance of tailor's chalk.
No matter how many you buy, they somehow vanish without explanation.
The life of a tailor is filled with challenges, lessons, surprises, and plenty of stories to tell. Every stitch teaches patience, every mistake teaches wisdom, and every completed outfit reminds us why we love the craft.
✂️ Tailoring is not just a profession—it's an adventure.
