At the sound of "I'm a fashion designer", so many things come to mind. While some are true others are misconceptions.
There are lots of misconceptions about the fashion industry that need to be debunked.
I will be sharing some in this post.
✖️ Being able to sew automatically makes you successful in the Fashion Industry.
To sew and to successfully run a fashion business are two different things. There are processes you should learn and understand beyond knowing how to sew.
Knowing how to sew is just the beginning of the journey. You'll need more to succeed in the industry.
✖️ A fashion designer must be able to sew all kinds of wears.
How abeg? 🤦♀️
It will be difficult for you to focus on so many things all at once. Fashion designing is vast. Choose a niche and focus on it. It's better to focus on one thing, perfect it before moving to another. This will help you not to be a Jack of all trades; master of none.
✖️ You can learn everything about fashion in 3 months.
It is IMPOSSIBLE to learn everything about fashion designing in only 3 months. You can without doubt learn the basis and so on but not entirely everything about fashion Designing.
Incase you intend signing up for a 3 month fashion class, be sure to upgrade after that and never stop learning.
✖️ You must be able to draw or sketch to be a good fashion designer.
Like I mentioned earlier, fashion designing is vast. You don't have to sit on the machine to be a fashion designer. The fashion industry is also made up of illustrators who sketch and draw design. They may not know how to sew but they can sketch designs. Also, you might not know how to draw /sketch design, but you can sew. It doesn't make you any less a good fashion designer.
