Taking accurate body measurements is essential for well-fitting garments. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you do it properly:
Tools You'll Need:
A soft measuring tape
A mirror (to check alignment)
A notepad or measurement chart
Someone to help you (optional but ideal)
General Tips:
Wear close-fitting clothes or undergarments.
Stand naturally without sucking in your stomach or puffing out your chest.
Keep the tape snug but not tight.
Key Body Measurements for Sewing/Fashion Design:
1. Bust/Chest
Measure around the fullest part of your bust/chest.
Keep the tape straight across the back and parallel to the floor.
2. Waist
Find your natural waistline (usually the narrowest part of your torso, above the belly button).
Wrap the tape around it snugly, not tightly.
3. Hip
Measure around the fullest part of your hips/buttocks.
Usually 7–9 inches below the waist.
4. Shoulder Width
Measure from the edge of one shoulder to the other across the back.
5. Sleeve Length
Start from the shoulder point to the wrist bone, with your arm slightly bent.
6. Back Length (Nape to Waist)
Measure from the base of the neck (nape) to the natural waistline.
7. Front Length (Shoulder to Waist)
From the shoulder seam near the neck, down over the bust to the waist.
8. Neck Circumference
Wrap the tape around the base of your neck where a collar would sit.
9. Thighs, Knee, Calf, and Ankle (for trousers)
Measure each at the widest point.
