Not every success story has to start in tailoring.

Someone can spend years in another industry, save money, build connections, and decide to invest heavily in fashion. That does not make him a scammer.

Yes, there are people who hide illegal activities under legitimate businesses. That should be investigated based on evidence and intelligence, not assumptions about someone’s car, apartment, embroidery machine or how quickly their business grew.

We need to be careful with the narratives we push.

When we constantly associate young fashion entrepreneurs with fraud simply because they suddenly have expensive machines, cars or a better lifestyle, we may unintentionally create suspicion around an entire industry.

A young man investing in himself is not automatically a Yahoo boy.

Let’s call out fraud where there is evidence, but let’s stop criminalising ambition, investment and legitimate success.

Fashion is a business. Investing in fashion is not a crime.

One thing I learnt this week as a fashion designer: NEVER compromise reliability for price.

I had an order that needed to get to my customer urgently. I sent it through a logistics company in Lagos, expecting them to do their part.

Days went by… and the item had not even moved beyond their hub. They hadn’t picked it up.

My customer was getting impatient, and honestly, I was getting worried too.

With everything I already had on my plate, I had to leave what I was doing, go straight to their hub, retrieve the package and start looking for another solution.

From there, I went all the way to the airport to find a more reliable logistics partner who could get the outfits to my customer on time.

And that experience reminded me of something every business owner needs to understand:

Don’t always choose the cheapest person. Choose the person you can trust.

As a fashion designer, your responsibility doesn’t end when the outfit leaves your shop. Your customer’s experience continues until that package gets to them safely and on time.

Sometimes, paying a little more for a reliable service can save you from losing much more — your time, your money, your reputation and most importantly, your customer’s trust.

Partner with people who understand the value of your business.

Because when your business grows, you need reliable people around you who can grow with you.

Cheap can save you money today. Reliability can save your business tomorrow.

Fabric sourcing might look easy from the outside, but tailors go through a lot before choosing the right fabric for an outfit.

We consider the colour, texture, quality, weight, how it falls on the body, how it works with the design, and even how the embroidery will sit on it.

Sometimes, finding the perfect fabric takes more time than making the outfit itself.

So when you see a beautifully finished outfit, remember that the work started long before the sewing machine was turned on. 🧵✂️
