Studio Samira Boon, founded in Japan in 2004, is a textile architecture studio based in Amsterdam and Tokyo with a strong focus on creating flexible and dynamic environments. Uniting art, science and technique leads to new insights and stimulates innovation. Studio Samira Boon pioneers in the world of dimensional architectural textiles challenging perception of architecture and creating space for

the undiscovered. As an expert in the material properties of textiles, Studio Samira Boon advises and collaborates with all kinds of professionals in the fields of architecture and textile industry to formulate project-specific solutions. Recent works of Studio Samira Boon include BioFold and ARCHI FOLDS: two innovative series of textile based structures, improving the climate and acoustics within living and public spaces. BioFold, composed of different textile waste streams, is a unique series of acoustic and insulating wall claddings, produced in collaboration with NPSP, DoFactory and Wolck. BioFold is a part of the “Exploded View Beyond Building”, a travelling circular home demonstrator, showcasing new materials and methods at numerous places and events such as Dutch Design Week and Floriade. ARCHI FOLDS is the result of the collaboration with Tokyo University and the Dutch TextielLab, combining traditional origami techniques with advanced digital textile weaving possibilities. Samira Boon actively shares her techniques and concepts in lectures and workshops and has taught at various design institutions including the Design Academy Eindhoven, the Academy of Architecture Amsterdam, Seoul National University of Technology and the Royal Academy of the Arts in the Hague.

Ever wondered what it takes to truly measure sustainability? 🌿
Meet LCA - Life Cycle Assessment. It’s how companies track the environmental impact of a product from start to finish (and back again).

For our BioFold material, which is used to make our acoustic panels, we evaluated the environmental impact of the life cycle, analyzing everything from raw materials to the potentials of reuse.

Why? Because transparency matters. LCA helps us—and you—make smarter, eco-conscious choices.
In the Netherlands alone, 13% of input materials in construction and renovation of buildings come from secondary and renewable sources.

In turn, the building sector is still largely a linear system. Construction and demolition waste accounts for more than a third of all waste generated in the EU.

Stay tuned as we reveal how BioFold compares to other materials in CO2 emissions, eco-costs, acoustic performance, and many more💡

A SCOBY is primarily known as a bacterial culture, used in brewing kombucha, a fermented tea beverage. At Studio Samira Boon, we turned this unsuspecting organism into Kombutex - a living biocomposite.

This is where Kombutex comes in to create a living, regenerative ecosystem. The dehydrated scoby is transformed into a leather-like texture, which can be applied in interiors.

Did you know that viscose, a material found in most mattresses, often ends up as waste?

In the Netherlands alone, 1.5 million mattresses are discarded every year, many of them bound for landfills.
At Studio Samira Boon, we’re turning this problem into a solution.

By recycling viscose from discarded mattresses, we create a biocomposite through an innovative process: the viscose is shredded and combined with bio-PLA, forming a completely new material with unique properties and a refined finish.

At BBN, circularity shines in their newly opened office, where every detail—from floors to ceilings—reflects a commitment to sustainability.

The journey starts with bringing together the right team, in this case whose expertise shape a vision for a truly circular workspace. Navigating regulations and laws is a crucial step, balancing creative ambition with compliance. Determining the design direction is equally important, ensuring functionality and aesthetics align with sustainability goals.

Finally, every product was chosen with care, including BioFold acoustic panels, which embody the principles of a circular economy by turning textile waste into functional, adaptable solutions.
The result? A workspace where innovative materials like BioFold not only enhance functionality but also actively reduce waste and promote reuse.
At BBN, this office stands as a testament that change starts with us—step by step, choice by choice. ♻💚

Bifold’s origami-like folds aren’t just elegant—they’re rooted in nature. 🍃 Inspired by the way leaves fold and insects adapt, our panels bring function and beauty to modern spaces.

Origami techniques let us create adaptive designs that go beyond acoustics—imagine flexible screens, lightweight structures, or foldable materials, all with sustainability at heart.

✨ What would you like to see inspired by origami?

BioFold is a structural, durable biocomposite inspired by the abundance of waste in the textile industry.
At Kunstlinie, a BioFold coral garden showcases how recycled textiles can find new purpose in a breathtaking display.

Inspired by the intertidal zone, where the city of Almere is located, this installation symbolizes transformation and resilience, blurring the boundaries between land and water, softness and strength.
This installation means to highlight the ever-changing spectacle where light and sound breathe life into this unique material ecosystem.

The winner of in the Product category - Archi Folds, an artistic facade designed for Taikoo Li Qiantan store in Shanghai enhances the sense of aesthetic, as well as intimacy. 🍂

Origami textiles can be versatile, serving as room dividers, acoustic panels, shading devices, or decorative elements. Their multifunctionality decreases the need for additional materials in a space, simplifying interior design with fewer resources.

💚

This project translates handmade paper-folding into digital weaving techniques to create architectural interventions representing an absolute breakthrough in the digitalisations and materialisation of folded structures.

Can bio-based acoustic panels work just as effectively as their non-sustainable competitors? 🤔

The short answer is yes, but if you were to ask us on a deeper level, we'd say bio-based interior elements are the future of design. Not only do they contribute to the overall well-being of users, but bio-based materials also have a unique advantage over fossil-based materials, as they reduce the net carbon footprint of products.

Bio-Fold utilizes natural fibers and textile waste streams that are otherwise difficult to recycle, contributing to creating healthy and functional environments.

Wow, we couldn't be more excited to share this news!

Our design of Archi Folds facade for the Hermès Taikoo Li Qiantan store in Shanghai won the in the Product Category 🥳

Composed of only two contrasting yarns, a soft, matt off–white opaque and stiff, transparent, and shiny yarn, the facade becomes progressively transparent towards the sky to let natural daylight in.

The 3D textile installation regulates the climate by magically filtering the light and creates a sophisticated atmosphere. It further improves the customers' spatial and shopping experience by surrounding them with serene privacy.
