One of the more underrated parts of shoe care is simply choosing the right colour.

One of the things we always find interesting is how much the tone of a shoe can change depending on the polish used.

A neutral cream keeps things very natural and is great when the leather already has plenty of character on its own. A coloured cream, on the other hand, helps restore richness and depth, especially around areas that have lightened through wear. Suede and nubuck tend to scare people a bit when they get marked, but often the fix is much simpler than expected.

That also means prevention matters a lot more than trying to aggressively clean it afterwards. A good protector spray helps repel water and dirt before they can properly settle into the leather, which makes maintenance much easier in the long run.

Especially with lighter suede colours, a bit of protection early on can save a lot of frustration later.

Leather dye is one of those products that deserves a bit of respect before jumping straight in.

Unlike cream polish, dye actually changes the leather itself, which means preparation matters a lot. Cleaning thoroughly, testing colours properly, and applying thin even layers usually gives the best results. Done carefully, it can completely transform an old pair or restore colour where regular creams are no longer enough.

good shoe tree is one of the simplest things you can buy for your shoes, but also one of the most effective.

After a day of wear, leather holds moisture and starts to crease where the shoe flexes. Putting shoe trees in afterwards helps the leather dry more evenly, keeps the shape cleaner, and reduces deep creasing over time. Cedar shoe trees have the added benefit of helping absorb moisture and odour as well.

Not the most exciting purchase perhaps, but definitely one of the most worthwhile.
