Color is quietly becoming one of the most interesting innovation spaces in materials.

From fermentation to waste streams, a new generation of companies is redefining how color is made.

Different technologies, different philosophies — but a shared shift away from synthetic systems.

Feels like it’s time to bring this ecosystem together.. Maybe even a Color Association?

We rethink color from the ground up.

Not as finishing.
As infrastructure.

We turn waste into pigment.
Pigment into system.
System into scale.

Circular input.
Industrial output.

Color has always been a system.
It moved through soil, trade routes, laboratories, and factories — shaping power, culture, and industry.

Today, the system is shifting again.

At ILANGA, we don’t look at natural color as a return to the past, but as the foundation for a new infrastructure — where waste becomes pigment, and color becomes circular.

From commodity → to chemistry → to regeneration.

Organic waste is an untapped color library.

Food by-products like onion skins, avocado pits, mango peels and walnut shells contain powerful natural pigments — capable of producing rich, scalable color systems for textiles.

By converting these residues into powder pigment, ILANGA:

– reduces reliance on synthetic dyes
– gives value to existing waste streams
– enables circular coloration for fashion and interiors

This is not just about “natural color”.
This is about redesigning the sourcing of color at industry level.

Waste is not waste — it’s a resource.

Comment “Circular” to receive the full issue.

With Independent Circular Design Magazine — Vol. 001, we explore circularity as a shared practice — from foundations and changemakers to culture, consumption, and the role of color in circular systems.

We invite you to read this magazine as a space for learning and reflection. Whether you are a designer, student, brand, or simply curious about how things are made, we hope these stories encourage you to look beyond the surface — to see design not as a single moment of creation, but as an ongoing relationship between people, materials, and systems.

Storytime! For the past 11 months, we have been shaping what ILANGA is becoming - the brand, the story and the world around it.

What started as natural dyeing workshops evolved into a clothing brand idea using only natural materials and dyes, then into research to open up a natural dyeing warehouse — until we faced the reality of production costs, global supply chains and the realization that most brands outsource their production, dyeing and finishing abroad. ‘Pivot’ was THE word for 2025!!

That’s when ILANGA began evolving into what it’s becoming now: a next-generation pigment company for the textile industry, creating color from plant-based waste, such as onion-skins & coffee grounds: offering a circular, scalable, and safer alternative for people and planet.
