Jeans, 2021
Presented at Losdok gallery.

A little more context:
For almost 20 years, mash-ups of space and clothing popped up in my head, resulting in hundreds of sketches of site-responsive garments and sculptures. Like a diary, I have always hidden them, but now they are ready for and open to possibilities to be become reality.

Clothing – everyday items and the ultimate universal visual language β€” is warped, stretched, repeated, cropped and reconfigured in many ways, surprising the spectator with a new vocabulary. Therefor I use archetype casual wear to maximize the quality of recognition and intimacy.

Playing with perception is an important theme in my work. The space around a garment is just as important as the clothing itself. I’m investigating this through textile sculptures, optical illusions and site-responsive clothing, which extends outside the body, literally blending with the space. Disrupting the traditional relationship between wearer and clothing, with the goal to cause a delay,Β imbalance and change of perspective.

Clothing is so fascinating because it’s close to the body, and has the power to influence your movement, feeling or surrounding, but at the same time it doesn’t have to be functional at all. A garment does not need to obey the body or even needs a physical host to obtain its power or even be mΓ³re powerful!

I want my work to counterbalance consumerism and adding awareness, an emotional re-valuation of the (too many) clothes already out there, without making more myself. At the same time I try to question personal space, idealism, beauty, virtuality, social mobility, impatience, prejudice and intimacy.

The dot functions as a 'bulls-eye', a focus and hold in the turbulent ocean of textile, to then slowly disappear into it. Fittingly, the dot is the symbol of creation and a new beginning.

A little more context;

My critical attitude towards the fashion system is often in conflict with the magical powers that I attribute to clothing and textiles. But by combining these I want to have a positive impact.
In my search for reinterpreting fashion I started experimenting with textile abstractions. An intuitive study of color, textures and shapes resulted in the Soft Dots. Disrupting the ratio by breaking through the traditional relationship towards clothing, and putting textile (back) on the pedestal where it belongs, making people aware of its beauty and qualities.

At the same time these dots also elicit a change of perspective outside of the real of fashion and have meditative qualities. It certainly does for me.
Contradictory trying to create 'a perfect dot', while achieving this through intuition, chance and randomness. The fight of my fingers with the textile – tucking, folding, pushing, stretching, pulling – is visible and tangible. It's incredible calming to get lost in the pleats, textures and colours. The dot functions as a 'bulls-eye', a focus and hold in the turbulent ocean of textile, to then slowly disappear into it. Fittingly, the dot is the symbol of creation and a new beginning.

Before starting on a big Soft Dot, I first compose small ones out of leftover textiles. I react intuitively to the colors and textures and how they relate to each other. That is why I redetermine the diameters and proportions for each work, in search of the right balance. The Soft Dots are a fascinating study of color and texture.
