Elements of Natural Colours: exploration on plant dyes and pigments (online)

May 5 - 12 - 19 - 26 (Tuesday’s)
19:00 - 20:30 (Central European Time) via Zoom

If you’re aiming to emphasize on the technical, scientific and alchemical aspects of working with and cultivating plant dyes to make paint for printing; during these gatherings you can learn about the scientific dimensions of color.

Some of these chemical, biological and artistic research questions will be answered and developed together:

- Which painting plants have a relatively large yield of dye, and are therefore suited for use on a larger scale?

- How can waste of the food industry be used to obtain natural dye?

- Which applications of dye plants are of interest for society?

- Which techniques (like changing the pH) are there to influence the intensity of natural colourants?

- What is the function of colourants (for instance, in the roots of) plants?

- Why does the amount of colourant in plants change over time?

- How do the surroundings (soil, other plants) influence the creation of colourants in the plant?

- What is the chemical background of the change of natural colourants, by adding tannin or another natural flux material, as opposed to metal salts?

- How does the harvesting method influence the quality of the dye?

AMSTERDAM PLANTS INK Masterclass - April 11 & 12

Join us for a two-day Masterclass exploring the hidden colours growing around us.

We’ll forage for local plants, prepare natural inks, and dive into the science and art of colour. The workshop is split across two sessions: the first day focuses on foraging and plant identification, while the second day is dedicated to cooking, modifying, and testing the inks.

This hands-on course blends fieldwork, botanical knowledge, and experimental ink-making—designed for artists, designers, and curious minds.

Together, we’ll explore the following questions:
What is colour? Where does it come from? How can we observe our surroundings through a different lens—both artistically and scientifically?

April 11 & 12 ( Saturday Sunday)

WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT FROM THIS WORKSHOP?

Saturday, April 11

15:00 - 18:00

In-depth introduction to natural colourants

Foraging walk in the neighbourhood to identify and harvest seasonal flora

Preparing plant material for ink extraction on the second day.

Sunday, April 12

15:00–18:00

Cooking and extracting colour from the foraged plants

Experimenting with modifiers (like pH shifts) to expand the colour palette

Learning about dye families, their properties, and lightfastness

Testing results on various types of paper and documenting outcomes

This is a unique opportunity to work with locally foraged material, experiment with natural inks, and deepen your understanding of colour—from soil to surface.

Includes:
- High quality materials
- Step by step guidance
- High quality printing paper
- PDF handout
- Refreshments & snacks

Max 8 people per group

Price for 2 day masterclass including materials: € 150,00

Registration and more information please email: [email protected]

Location: RIso Pop / Maasstraat 182 - 1079 BL - Amsterdam
