Dead skin cell, opening Friday 12 September riettewanders ’ work is not easily defined. Her multi facetted artistic practice is rooted in drawing, but often incorporates other media such as painting, photography and sculpture. Wanders’ experiential approach may result in large black and white drawing,or, recently, in small figurative oil pastels. These oil pastels reveal parts of the body that are barely accessible to the eye: the oral cavity or the sole of a (dirty) bare foot. Her recent works expose an intimacy that is both seductive and repulsive. Ninamounah navigates the delicate boundary between life and death, instinct and culture. Rooted in biology and a lineage of rebels, her voice emerged through her years in the Paris fashion industry—an act of defiance against the structures of capitalism and patriarchy. In this new body of work, created in collaboration with photographer Sammy Huijts and philosopher Dr. Simon Gusman, the intimate images of herself with the crippled horse mark the beginning of a series. Her new equine figure embodies this defiance, inviting us to cross the very thresholds from which we are warned. transforms the ordinary through the dynamic and purposeful language of fashion photography, into a celebration of life and the human spirit. He uses the photo book as an intimate medium— providing him with the discipline necessary to express his vision.
