For the musical ‘Waitress’ I was asked to make a full figured uniform pattern. Now, I love to be challenged when it comes to patternmaking, especially fit-wise 😊
I started by making a pattern according to the measurements given and made a fit sample. Since we don’t grow proportionally and ‘shape’ is not the same thing as ‘measurements’, I prefer doing most the fitting on the model itself. While fitting the sample I could cut and pin the balance (front length vs back length) on the body. Then adjust the pattern accordingly and off to the sewing room ✂️✂️✂️ where they made the final uniform-costume to look exactly the same as the other two uniforms 👌🏽

As the musical story goes, these women and their friendship, stand up against an abusive marriage.
But to me it felt as it was a celebration of women in all shapes and sizes at the same time 🙏💞

Development of a male corset!
- It all started with bringing a male mannequin into the house. Oh yes!
- To meet the actors measurements I added some padding around the waist.
- Then I could play with pinning, moving, cutting, drawing to see where the cut seams need to sit and the overall shape.
- When satisfied, and markings in place, I used these ‘pattern pieces’ to make a fit sample to fit on the actor.
- Fit adjustment -> add length: cutting the pattern open at the waist and spreading.
- Handed over the final pattern to the sewing team. They did a fantastic job on sewing, adding boning for structure and funky embellishments for the Vavoom factor!

From drafting, to fitting, to altering, to Vavoom SHE’S ROCKING IT ON STAGE!

I know this was a month ago already and that we’re way past Xmas, but I was a bit offline for awhile so just catching up 😇

Fit alterations:
- pinched out some access fabric, curving the strap, for it to sit smoother on the upper arm.
- the front darts, that are worked in the cut seam, were to deep (see draglines), but measurements were OK. Therefore I reduced the dart width in the cut seam but removed this amount of width at the front panel side seam
- added length to meet the ground

For the window of I wanted to create an upcycled pencil skirt using old jeans 👖
Being a pattern designer, I thought to go for pattern design 3.0 😅 extending a specific pattern in the design of the skirt as well. So I sketched a 3D cube feel and cut up three shades old jeans, sewing them together into a drafted pencil skirt. Fun process & result.
However I do notice that the cube effect is way more visible when laying flat then when on a mannequin... One of those things that you need to look 3 times to see it 👀

For the window of Zandpand I wanted to create an upcycled pencil skirt using old jeans 👖
