I recently created this illustration with the assistance of AI, drawing inspiration from the remains of the Sassanid era. The artwork likely represents a dancer figure from that fascinating period. You can see the original inspiration picture on the left side of my work. For the background, I selected AI-generated Persian geometric and floral tiles to enhance the historical and cultural essence of the illustration.

I wanted to share the fascinating tradition of Yalda Night, an ancient festival celebrated in Iran during the winter solstice.
Yalda Night falls on the night of December 20/21 in the Gregorian calendar, marking the transition between the last day of the ninth month (Azar) and the first day of the tenth month (Dey) in the Iranian solar calendar. This significant celebration extends beyond Iran to historically Iranian-influenced regions, including Azerbaijan, Iraqi Kurdistan, Balochi areas, Afghanistan, and Tajikistan.
During this enchanting night, the longest and darkest of the year, friends and family come together to partake in festivities. The celebration involves communal activities such as eating, drinking, and engaging in the reading of poetry, particularly works by renowned poets like Hafez and Shahnameh. The festivities often extend well into the night.
Fruits and nuts play a central role in the Yalda Night celebration, with pomegranates and watermelons holding particular significance. These fruits, with their vibrant red hues, symbolize the crimson colors of dawn and the glow of life.
In recognition of its cultural importance, Shab-e Yalda was officially added to Iran's List of National Treasures in a special ceremony in 2008.
I found this tradition to be a beautiful example of how communities come together to celebrate light, life, and the enduring power of togetherness.
