Folk art chest anno 1722, from the Eastern Netherlands. The central panel displays an intricate, continuous weave of geometric lines (a variant of the so-called daisy wheel or rosette). In 18th-century folk belief, it was thought that evil spirits and witches had a compelling urge to follow lines.

Because this pattern consists of endlessly interwoven geometric paths without a clear beginning or end point, it acted as a symbolic maze or trap. A malevolent entity would become fascinated by the pattern, get lost in it, and thus lose access to the chest (and its valuable contents).
