Reincarnation of Military Uniforms Innovation Project at Bright Day!

On the 4th weekend of November, Saturday 24 and Sunday 25, the Ministry of Defense will act as the official partner of the largest tech festival in the Netherlands: Bright Day. (https://www.brightday.nl/)

Bright Day is Bright's annual techfest, the leading tech platform in the Netherlands. Always looking for ingenuity in digital technology, the game changers and the eye openers. For this year, more than 20,000 visitors are expected.

The Defense contribution is positioned under the DEFLAB theme.

DEFLAB is the technologyblog of Defense and is part of the recruitment campaign 'Working at Defense'. One of the innovative contributions of the Ministry of Defense is in collaboration with the organization Dutch Awearness with the project Reincarnation of old military uniforms.

This innovation brings the social and economic benefits of the circular economy to Working at Defense

The project of reincarnation of old military uniforms will be officially launched on 24 November 2018 during the Bright Day in Amsterdam with the presence of LtCol Rob van Arnhem and the founder of Dutch Awearness, Rien Otto.

This project is a pilot to test whether it is possible to recycle the used military uniforms into cliff products which the army can use in their daily work. For this project the Cliff products made were Floor plates and Road plates, which can be used by the army under various conditions for different purposes.

The technology used for the Cliff products represents a very important step in the accomplishment of a fully circular supply and production chain that reduces significantly the environmental impact of the many processes associated with textiles and other products. Therefore, the cooperation between the Military Defense and Ducth Awearness is also representative of the emerging circular economy in our government’s actions and in the most versatile fields.

NEWS RELEASE OCTOBER 2018

Dutch Awearness proudly announces to our community and all fellow colleagues that together with the city of Rotterdam we are taking part at the Innovation Expo 2018!

Dutch Awearness in collaboration with the city of Rotterdam is taking responsibility for the textile waste produced by transforming it into new raw materials. During the event that will occur on 4 October 2018 in Rotterdam (https://innovationexpo2018.nl/en/) we will be showing how Urban Mining and circular economy works.

Every year we throw 124.000.000 kg of clothing away in The Netherlands! If we reuse this we will save 14.880.000.000 liters of water, 8.060.000.000 kg of CO2 and € 868.000.000 of social costs on an annual basis.

Under the motto "Let's beat the mountain", Dutch Awearness and its partners take responsibility for the products we make and use. From 7000 kg of old work clothing and 7000 kg of plastic waste, we have a 14,000 kg of textile and plastic waste that we transform into new raw materials for the city.

At the RDM Submarine Wharf in Rotterdam South Cliff products like picnic tables, park bench and box of flowers made from the waste materials will be exposed. Furthermore, a film about the recycling process production and the environment savings from Cliff will be shown on large screens.

The Innovation Expo 2018 is a sample sheet of the most recent and high-profile developments that the Netherlands has to offer. Dutch Awearness together with the city of Rotterdam will be there to present our solutions to some of the major social challenges to help keeping our country safer.

The Innovation Expo 2018 is open to visitors from 09.00 a.m. until 08.00 p.m. The bustling expo hall (closing at 06.00 p.m.) features a host of interesting and amazing innovations for you to enjoy throughout the day. In France, fashion stores might be obliged to donate the unsold clothes to charity rather than throwing them away. NOS interviewed Rien from Dutch Awearness, let's see what his opinion is:

Frankrijk wil modehuizen verplichten om onverkochte kleding cadeau te doen aan liefdadigheidsorganisaties. Dit om vervuiling die ontstaat door de vernietiging van kleding tegengaan. Is dit ook een idee voor Nederland?

It was a great interview with PhD Researcher Patricia Garcia from Aston Business School on Friday. Dutch Awearness is happy to be a case study in her research! This time, academy learns from real business practices. Looking forward to her final research outcome. At that time, it will be our companies' turn to learn from the academic research. This is the sharing of knowledge, and this is the core of circular economy!
