I often see people offering and using wool labeled as "naturally dyed." While these vibrant colors are beautiful, there is a nuance in the process that I feel is worth sharing. 🌿
In the world of textiles, there is a growing difference between using natural dye extractsand the art of plant-dyeing from the raw source. My heart beats for the latter—the path of the ancients. 🏛️⚔️
I don’t just apply color; I strive to recreate an authentic, centuries-old craft. I work with the same raw materials used by the Greeks, the Romans, and the Vikings. My process happens in copper cauldrons over an open wood fire, just as it has for thousands of years. 🪵🔥
To me, there is a world of soul between dissolving a pre-made extract and the alchemy of the raw plant:
* The Living Source: By using whole madder roots or rhubarb roots, I extract dozens of hidden pigment nuances that a standardized concentrate simply cannot capture.
* The Elements: I manage the wood fire, the copper of my kettle, and the precise pH levels of the water to slowly coax the color from the fiber.
* The Heritage: Every thread I dye carries the weight of history and the patience of a slow, days-long immersion.
While concentrated "natural dyes" offer convenience and speed, they can miss the raw energy and depth of the plant itself. My wool isn't just colored; it is infused with smoke, history, and the untamed power of the earth. It is an authentic connection to our ancestors that you simply won't find in a factory-processed powder. ✨
How do you value the process behind the things you wear? Do you feel the difference in a piece created through fire, earth, and time? 👇

This is the plainweave summerwool woven at 103cm wideness. A very tight woven wool. Many yarns per cm which gives this fabric a sturdy yet soft feel and a bit of a silk-like look for this thin quality.

Ideal for many purposes when warmth is not essential. The appearance is very elegant, it drapes wonderful.
I’ve got one heavy roll of it and the fabric already has several fans. Be sure to get your piece before all is gone 💪🏻
A few dyed examples can be found in my post of may 24 last year!

13/03/2026

The greenish yellow version.
Of course, the lighter the colour, the more translucent the fabric is. In dark blue or green it will be very little translucent. In pink or yellow much more!
Both these fabrics and more are available in my post from Nov 21!

The red fancy rib-like fine herringbone twill.
Ideal for a Palla, gown, light cloak or tunic.

The fabric is slightly translucent, (different than transparant). In the bright sun a bit see through (shades).
Still directly worn on the body with some linen underneath well dressed ✨

Last cold day for a while now!

Lately I discovered a new supplier for mordant, especially Iron sulphate. It looked as great quality but I had to test if it is as good as it looks 💪🏼
Normally when it freezes i cannot dye. But a frozen hank is not so hard to handle, so I made a small pot of yellow, added the iron and then two hanks of white wool.
They turned out very deep dark green. I am very satisfied with the result.

Today it isn’t as cold anymore so I expect to make some more deep dark green fabrics in the coming weeks ✨
And some other colours too of course 😉
