Dutch fashion designer Michelangelo Winklaar was born on Curacao. Winklaar's grandmother was a bridal sculptor and taught him the tricks of the subject from an early age. Years later, he studied the Mode-lyceum in The Netherlands and designed clothes for various artists. Michelangelo makes hand-crafted garments with an eye for detail. Each piece is unique and made with delic

ate fragile fabrics through techniques like drapery and (bead) embroidery. Michelangelo Winklaar connects the old and new techniques in his women's fashion collections. In that he embraces the craft of couture techniques and combines these with his original cultural background, or as he denotes his "exotic roots".

This chain stitch of waste fringes is a creative example of turning waste products into something new. Although it was intended as an example for future projects, it was a time-consuming piece of work that gave me new ideas to continue with.

Take a closer look at the MW J’stil balloon dress’24.

This removable three-layer dress is made of luxurious fabrics like silk jacquard and organza and the signature tulle trim. Six people worked on the dress for a total of 520 hours.

Deze uitneembare jurk met drie lagen is gemaakt van luxe stoffen als zijde jacquard en organza en de kenmerkende tule afwerking. Er hebben 6 mensen in totaal 520 uur aan de jurk gewerkt.

Bts recreating the red sprites dress from MW collection ‘Birds of Paradise 2008’

Not having excess to the lost patterns from the collection B.O.P., I started from scratch and draped the look on the mannequin. The original dress I made in 2008 was exhibited at Museum Paviljoens in Almere. But got lost. Making the dress brought back memories and have being evold as a designer, the new version of the dress embodies the original and excudes the MW developed handcraft.

Getting ready for its purpose, here is an overview of the works at the studio.
