WOOYOUNGMI HWARANG-INSPIRED FALL 2023 COLLECTION

Korean menswear brand, WOOYOUNGMI is no stranger to Paris Fashion Week. Long before the explosion of Korean style and entertainment, Madame Woo — as the brand’s founder is affectionately known — was already betting on menswear and envisioning a wardrobe for the “ideal man.” WOOYOUNGMI’s latest proposal for the Fall 2023 season was not any different. Leaning on its Korean heritage, the brand introduced pieces imbued with modernity, poise, and a dash of Korean history. The daughter of an architect, Woo Youngmi designs with the same precision as her father may have approached buildings. Aptly dubbed, “The Mother of South Korean Men’s Wear,” the designer now continues to strengthen WOOYOUNGMI’s international presence, alongside her daughter and co-creative director, Katie Chung.

The Collection

TYLER REES
Today is epic, because it’s the first time I’ve made a portrait of a male model. And special, he is the son of my dear friend Yoshka. I think he has a great talent, and already walked the runway for many high class fashion brands. Dior, Amiri, Loewe, Songzio, Etro, Fendi and Prada.
We will see a lot more of him, in my opinion he has the perfect charisma and powerful look.

So Tyler, I hope you recognize yourself in this illustration, loved drawing you!

New years illustration

DIOR SPRING 2019 COUTURE

To start the new year with an illustration of the collection that I admire is wonderful.
Maria Grazia Chiuri was inspired by Jean Cocteau, Pablo Picasso, Cindy Sherman and Richard Avedon’s “Dovima with elephants”, wich he shot in Paris’s Cirque d’ Hiver circa 1955.
She also came across hand sequined costumes made by the late Gérard Vicaire. Also adored the headpieces made by designer/Milliner

The colors, the playful atmosphere with a bit of an melancholic vibe really is magnificent.

I want 2023 to be colorful, playful and magnificent. And a bit of melancholy lol.

Promised myself to keep it simple, stop when I think it’s not finished. Scary but such a good feeling to do something out of my comfortzone.
Oh and also post at a time everybody is having dinner, traveling back from work is something completely different for me to do.

Loved drawing this gorgeous talented beauty called Nadia Lee Cohen.
Not only a muse of SCHIAPARELLI, but also a genius photographer and filmmaker. A brilliant match I think.

I experimented with a different way of portraying, different strokes of the brushes. I think I am in love with this portrait. Is that weird to say if your own work? Hope you love this one too! Let me know what your thoughts are. Lots of love

FALL COUTURE 2022

META MORPHISM
This fall 2022 collection marks her 15th anniversary. This collection is future-oriented, inspired by post-humanism, by transforming identities, the metaverse, but also hyperreality, where digital reality and psychical reality are becoming indistinguishable.
Naturally, to look forward, one has to look back — to eighth century and Ovid’s “ Metamorphoses” in this case. “ We are still facing those same questions: Who are we beyond our physical bodies?Where ate we going as human beings?

What touches me when I look at Iris's work are the endless details in her work. If you have time, check out her website and watch the process movie, which is fascinating. How a collection is created is actually something we forget. We see the collection on the runway and some backstage pictures but it is also very interesting to find out what the inspiration is and to see the process.

This time I made a choice to illustrate an old style from the 1920s. I like the vogue and Harpers Bazar covers of that time so much. I would like to see fashion magazines publish illustrated covers again. I know I will be available:)

DR ALIMANTADO

Dr Alimantado (born Winston James Thompson; 1952 in Kingston, Jamaica), also known as The Ital Surgeon, is a Jamaican reggae singer, DJ, and producer.

This portrait is huge, so my pictures might have another outcome because it’s to big for my a3 scanner.
As I mentioned in my reel, lots of different black and grey shades. I felt a bit more confident when I made this one. Loved painting the hair, felt so satisfying.

Titled: BORN AGAIN

Wonderful collection by designer Daniel Roseberry for Schiaparelli.
Love the way he combines his vision with the legacy that Elsa Schiaparelli left us.
The earrings were so heavy that they had to be secured with a discreet tiara hair band.

Haute couture is always something to look forward to, the ambiance, the garments and crafts are so beautifully made. My wish is to be present during Couture week in Paris. And draw and paint live.
Would love to paint when the models are backstage, or when the makeup artist is busy with the models.

SURREAL SHOULDER
Couture Spring/Summer 2022

“Your wife has a beautiful neck….”
The words are Nosferatu’s as quoted on an intertitle in A Symphony of Horror from 1922. And although Viktor & Rolf’s collection was inspired by the vampire himself, the wife in question may have benefitted from one of their haute couture creations this season. Constructing on corsets worn under each look, the designers raised the shoulders of their silhouette way above the neck, achieving an effect similar to the iconic image of Dracula as imagined by Old Hollywood.
“Dracula is such a powerful symbol of the fear of change in society. In Old Hollywood movies you have the archetypal scary image of the person in the doorway. This made us think of a shoulder line that we developed almost 30 years ago, in our very, very first collection for the contest in Hyères in 1993,” Rolf Snoeren explained.

Inspired by the way the photographer captured all the beauty from the background to the garments and how the models pose.
Mesmerizing story Viktor & Rolf shared with us in January. I painted a backstage image a few months ago for the 5th Fidaawards 2022. But I had to paint another one, because there is so much more to draw.
I wanted to draw like I did a couple of years ago, because I loved drawing the models like this. Was quite a challenge to put 3 models, with a background on an a4 size paper.
But I love painting little details, gives me a satisfying feeling:)
So it’s finally ready for you to see, and I hope you will like this style.

5th FIDA AWARDS FINALIST 2022

So trilled, overwhelmed and incredibly happy to discover I have made it to the finals!
I felt so proud that 3 of my submitted illustrations appeared on the long list, when it turned out that my 3 illustrations had been selected on the short list, I was so intensely happy. And now my name is among the finalists of the 5th Fida awards 2022. To see two of my illustrations selected is such a good feeling. I still can't believe it. I am blessed with such sweet and thoughtful followers, fellow illustrators and random people. They give wings to my work, with their compliments and uplifting words that make me blush. This time I felt that I had done a great job, I was in a good flow and had a lot of fun making it. What I've done differently this time is to stay true to my own handwriting and not think too much about what's likeable, but I thought it was important to bring out my own artistic qualities.
As an artist who still draws and paint by hand, its sometimes difficult to compete with the digitalization of today. I can’t erase, every drop if paint that falls on my paper unexpected I think, should I cover it? Or maybe let it be? The illustration I made of Alexander Mc Queen’s “Horn of Plenty”, was still wet when I suddenly saw that my sleeve had gone over my work. I left it like that, because I think I achieved the dramatic effect with it. So sometimes its nice when that happens.
I know I will always prefer drawing and painting by hand, because I love to mix my colors, the feeling and smell of paper, the excitement when my sketch is ready and I can finally use some color. I want to paint and draw, as an ode to the masters of the past.
