A very Tubu summer 🤱🏻🪵🧠🪢🧢🧬 Gunvor Nervold Antonsen’s “The Adaptables” at in Oslo 🦑

A truly magical show filled with gargantuan textile montages and chainsaw-carved wood figures from whole trunks of pine and ash.

“The unrefined and formless aspects of their appearance intensify the idea of flexibility. For Nervold Antonsen, it is about human beings’ unique ability to extend themselves, to adapt. In addition, the sense of an ongoing process is conveyed: We are never finished.”

Today marks ten year’s since the Rana Plaza disaster 💔

Over at Sophie Benson writes in detail about what happened that horrific spring day when at least 1134 people died after the Rana Plaza garment factory collapsed.

She also explains what has sadly not happened with regards to increased wages, unionising, welfare policies and safety regulations in the decade that has passed.

The disaster became a true awakening to the state of the globalised fashion industry and people who shops at fast fashion retailers such as Mango, Mango and Benetton — whose labels were found in the debris.

Sharing this information is not to shame someone who shops fast fashion (for many it’s the only option for inclusive sizing). It is still important to underline the fact that these tragic events are the true cost of very cheap apparel: Lives of other human beings, working in slave-like conditions, fearing for their health and safety.

If you feel emotional about this, distressed, upset or perhaps angry — there are several ways to get active and political about the care and welfare of garment workers as suggested by Atmos.

🍄 Behind recent calls for fungal futures — involving everything from “biohacked” bodies to anti-capitalist visions — lie carefully illustrated descriptions of the mushroom world by naturalists like M. F. Lewis.

🍄 Bound into three exquisitely colored volumes with filigreed title pages, her “Fungi of Shropshire” features hundreds of species, collected across forty-two years of work in England and Wales, rendered in pencil, watercolor, and ink.

🍄 Despite the enormity of Lewis’ project, little is known about her life — we have yet to discover her first name. What we do know is that she was deeply and intensely committed to studying mushrooms.

𝒲𝑒 𝒸𝓇𝑒𝒶𝓉𝑒 𝓈𝒽𝒶𝓅𝑒𝓈, 𝓃𝑜𝓉 𝓈𝒾𝓏𝑒𝓈 🪷🍄🐛🌳

Inspired by scholars such as Veronika Glitsch and the artist group The Rational Dress Society, we’ve decided to offer shapes, and not standardized sizes here at TUBU. And of course we had to rename them as well.

This might be confusing to some, as we’ve grown quite attached to the numbers and letters we decide are “ours”, i.e. the garments we take with us when we’re headed to a fitting room, a bit sweaty and uncomfortable.

We have four shapes in our apparel system. Each shape embodies four ”sizes” in one (in total more than 16 ”sizes”), due to the flexibility of the ribbed knit garment.

Our current shapes are:

Nelumbo 🪷
Amanita 🍄
Papilio 🐛
Betula 🌳

These are the Latin names for the lotus flower, the fly agaric mushroom, the butterfly caterpillar and the birch tree — all beautiful shapes in nature that shift and transform, according to cycles of life and seasons 🫧

We have to note that this is not a finished system. This is merely a start. If you cannot find your shape — let us know. We want to create garments for you and would love to get your measurements in order to continue on our path of more inclusive design 🧬
