It’s been a while since my last garden update but we’ve been enjoying our lil apartment garden lots lately - basil, lettuce, and cherry toms nearly finished 🌿🥬🍅 but chillies and lunchbox capsicums 🌶️🫑 are going strong with spring onions not too far away. 🥰 You’ll see we’ve planted a fair few marigolds 💐 with our veg - this is to deter pests! We think it works pretty well, especially around the lettuces which are so prone to attack by pesky slugs and caterpillars! 🐛🐛🐛 What’s the science behind this? Well they have a really strong smell which puts off most insects. Those that aren’t affected sacrifice themselves to save the veg! 🌼🥬

Happy international women and girls in science day! 👩‍🔬😍 Still a scientist, even though I seem to be wearing a lab coat a bit less these days 😅🥼🥽

Reflecting on another year doing what I love. 🧪🧬 It’s been busy, exciting, overwhelming at times, and oh so rewarding. I’ve been to some great workshops, taken part in a women in stem mentoring program, travelled to international conferences, and found a way to do my day job in between. Also pictured are some older highlights, such as a 1news segment, a magic school bus dress up, and a time when I was frequently doing markets.

Really though, I just want to say thank you. Thank you to the fantastic mentors that have been a part of my science journey so far, the friends and family that encourage me along every step of the way, and the wonderful wahine I work with these days. You’re all great and I appreciate the support. Also a huge thanks to you for being a part of A Moment of Science 🔬🧫 I look forward to seeing where 2026 takes us.

Who doesn’t love a Christmas lights trail?! 🎄💡

This year we tried using AI to map the best route to see some local houses shining bright. We provided a list of approx. 50 addresses across the BOP and asked it to pick the 10 closest ones and map a route. Funnily enough we got to experience an AI hallucination, after heading to a location that was not ever on the list to start with (and not lit up!). This is a timely holiday reminder that AI isn’t always right!!
