When the Team Is the Lifeline: What the Data Reveals About Belonging at Work
New research from Wiley Workplace Intelligence, based on responses from more than 1,600 employees, reinforces something many of us have experienced firsthand: our teams have a profound impact on how we feel at work.
The findings are encouraging:
ā
85% of employees feel connected to their colleagues.
ā
76% regularly experience joy at work.
But those positive experiences can quickly fade when workloads increase, stress builds, recognition is missing, or managers become overwhelmed.
One of the strongest messages from the research is that belonging doesn't happen by chance. It is created through trust, recognition, psychological safety, and leaders who are supported to support others.
When organisations invest in building strong team relationships, they don't just improve engagementāthey strengthen resilience, collaboration, and performance during times of change.
The Five BehaviorsĀ® framework provides a practical way to strengthen trust, encourage healthy conflict, build commitment, foster accountability, and achieve collective results. By focusing on these behaviours, teams can create a culture where people feel connected, valued, and equipped to thrive together.
