We're excited to share the news that Joyya received an A+ in the Ethical Fashion Report.

The Ethical Fashion Report assesses some of the world’s top fashion brands on the measures taken to protect workers in their supply chain and reduce environmental impact. Brands are assessed on five themes around workers protection and environmental management and are awarded a grade from A+ to F based on how they are performing compared to the industry average.

scored an A+ across all categories, making it the top scoring New Zealand brand and in the top 4 across the board.

An A+ score is great, but we know we're only scratching the surface of the change that our communities deserve. Change that allows everyone to have good job and education opportunities , access to decent healthcare, safe and sanitary housing and throughout all, moments of joy and fun!

Thanks for joining us on this journey!

Today marks International day for the eradication of poverty.

United we believe we can make even more of a difference in our world, with the same vision to build communities and transform lives in West Bengal, India.

We want to sustain the special relationships we have formed with the individuals and families we already work with, and we're keen to step even deeper into the communities surrounding us too. We hope you’ll come with us as we fight against the injustice of extreme poverty and exploitation.

We’d be foolish to think it was going to be easy, it never has been. But, together we reckon we can give it a good crack! In the words of our friend Shobita, “Dada, amra chesta korte hobe”, “Brother, we must try”.

We hope you’ll join us and a few thousand of the world’s greatest battlers, as we strive to help this tough little corner of West Bengal flourish a little more.

What you may know as Freeset and Liminal have ended and have come together to become “Joyya”.

We were previously two closely aligned organisations, but we believe that united we can make even more of a difference in our world. What remains the same is our heart to build communities and transform lives in West Bengal, India.

Together, we want to sustain the very special relationships we have formed with the individuals and families we already work with, but we’re keen to step even deeper into the communities surrounding us too. We hope you’ll come with us as we fight against the injustice of extreme poverty and exploitation.
HOW DO I ORDER?

Morena (morning) team, we've been a little silent on here recently but we're jumping back into the social media world.
-
Meet the Team:
It's a quick interview with Gauri* - one of the team who works in the screen printing department at .

Have a quick read (it'll take you 1min) - it's lifegiving to hear a slice of life in someone else's shoes. Its also a reminder you become a part of supporting more of these stories come to life. (*name has been changed)

Meet Gauri:

When do you wake up in the morning?
-
I don’t have an alarm but still, I manage to wake up at 4 AM. If anyday I am late, my whole day turns topsy turvy.
-
After waking up, what do you do?
I clean the entire house. I sweep the courtyard too. My house is made of mud, so I paint it with cow dung twice a week. Then I cook food for the family. I have a differently abled child, so I get all things ready for her before I start for the office.
-
How long does it take for you to reach work?
I don’t keep a track of time. Maybe 3 hours to reach the office and 3.5 hours while returning home.
-
How do you commute to the work?
I travel by auto-rickshaw for some distance, then change two buses to finally arrive at the office.
-
What are the challenges you face while traveling?
It’s tiring as I travel a long distance. After going home, I cook dinner. By the time I sleep, it’s midnight. And early in the morning I wake up. Also, I leave my child alone at home, so I often think of her.
-
How are you always so cheerful and full of energy?
I am living for my two daughters. I am their only support. My elder daughter is in a boarding school. She is good at her studies. Now she is in grade 9. I want to educate her. She must go to college. I am more concerned about my younger daughter; she can’t move freely. She needs my support all the time. If I am not there, I don’t know how she will survive. The work I do is a huge support for me. Besides financial, it gives me hope for a good future. I always think it’s a struggle for me now, but one day everything will turn around. Here I have good friends. They care for me. I can share things with them. If someday I am not able to cook, they carry lunch for me.

While many of us a getting on with our lives as if Covid-19 almost didn't exist, in India this is far from reality.
Our manufacturing partners at Freeset in West Bengal, India are in the midst of a full lockdown. Workers and friends in the community are afraid and uncertain for their future. Wage subsidies don't exist and life is already tough without the added burden of a devastating pandemic.

We know our friends in India could do with some support right now, and we're doing this in two ways.
By working hard to keep selling products that we have in stock (so keep those orders coming in!), and by getting behind a Global Covid Response Appeal for the communities we partner with.
If you'd like to be part of this, Click below and donate to our partners at Freeset.

KOLKATA LOCKDOWN:

Overnight the West Bengal Govt, has confirmed the state is going into full lockdown 16th- 30th of May.

To our brothers and sisters at Freeset and the many faces we don't know but who are deeply impacted by this pandemic, We're praying this time helps break and reduce the Covid spread, and we send our aroha to you all.

- - - - -

To you our customers,

It's hard writing a production update and about people lives in the same post, but we appreciate this does impact you.

Our primary supply of goods is from our partners at Freeset in Kolkata, India. Through these organisations, good jobs are created where poverty has previously dominated. Fair wages are paid, and employees are treated with dignity and respect.

During the Covid-19 crisis, much of India is in lockdown, and the export of goods from our factories is not always possible. So during this period, we’re supplementing our supply chain with merch from other sources. While it’s difficult to find a supplier with the same deep commitment to their employees as Freeset have, we have chosen suppliers where there is some benchmark of ethical commitment.

Regardless of supply, all the profits from any sales here go back to our producers in Kolkata to ensure they have an opportunity at a better way of life. So with every purchase you make, you’re helping make the world a little bit of a better place.

For many years, we've connected with communities in Kolkata, India helping support renewal in neighbourhoods marked by poverty and transformational business with .
It may be raining a little where we are in New Zealand, but nothing compared to our friends in Kolkata who are not only dealing with the escalating Covid-crisis in India, but some pretty heavy monsoon flooding - this is the main road in Kolkata, close to the Freeset factory. We hope everyone is doing ok! 🙏
