When we built our own home back in 2012, I didn’t think we needed an Interior Designer.

Richard thought we should. I thought, “How hard can choosing colours be?”

Fast forward to me standing in random driveways holding brick samples in the air, trying to match joinery colours to a roof three houses away. We actually had a great day driving around admiring homes… but wow, it would’ve been far less stressful having a professional guide us from the start!

That experience taught us something valuable, building or renovating your home should feel exciting and enjoyable, not overwhelming.

There’s something pretty special about building on the hills in Takamatua.

The setting alone does half the storytelling. But it’s more than that.

We’d undertaken a major renovation project for these clients a few years ago and were delighted when they asked us to build their holiday home. Cedar and stone were a natural choice, creating a home that feels perfectly at home in its surroundings, while the expansive multi-level decking takes full advantage of the spectacular outlook.

Hill builds challenge conventional construction. Steep sites, clever engineering and difficult access mean no two projects are ever the same. And that’s exactly what we love about them.

What do you do with building timber off-cuts? Build a chicken coop of course!

Timber off-cuts are a normal part of the building industry and at Radius Building we’re always looking for ways to make sure good timber doesn’t just end up in the skip. Instead, when we can, we reuse it, repurpose it and give it a second life.

Recently, that meant turning a collection of off-cuts into a chicken coop for our very spoilt (and very happy) chickens, with a bit of help from our 15-year-old daughter Neve, who is just as keen on building as she is on her feathered friends.

It’s a simple thing, but it reflects something we care about deeply, being thoughtful with materials, reducing waste where we can and making sure we’re not just building great homes (for our clients and our chooks), but also doing things in a responsible way behind the scenes.

And if it makes the chickens happy too… even better!

Meet Troy!

Troy is one of our Foremen and an absolute legend of a guy. With 22 years in the building industry, Troy first worked with us as a Senior Chippy 13 years ago before heading to the North Island for a while. Thankfully, he made his way back south over two years ago and re-joined the Radius Building team, where he’s been a key part of the crew ever since.

Every day, Troy brings his infectious smile, calm demeanour, deep building knowledge, problem-solving skills and just the right amount of cheekiness, exactly how we like it.

Married with two sons, he somehow balances a busy family life while still giving 100% to every project he’s involved in.

Lately, Troy has been leading the charge in Hanmer Springs, progressing our client’s home with impressive speed, accuracy and attention to detail. He’s the kind of builder who quietly gets things done to the required high standard and keeps the whole site running smoothly.

We value Troy hugely and are incredibly glad he chose to re-join the Radius family.

In this space, a deep blue feature panel wall is a strong design choice which adds depth and calm.

A full run of windows brings in plenty of natural light across the upstairs, opening up the hallway as you move through the home.
